Staying in the Bronx

How safe is it for two couples (young 20s) to stay in the Bronx for a NY trip? They are interested in a good hotel rate and going to see a Yankee's Game.
Thanks,
LSS

There are some areas of the Bronx that are quite safe and like all cities some areas should be avoided. Whether or not it's a good idea to stay in the Bronx depends on what you are planning to do. Is it your intention to only go to a Yankee Game or are you also planning to spend time seeing the typical tourist sights NYC has to offer?

If it's the latter you'd be much better off staying in Midtown Manhattan. It's fairly easy to get to Yankee Stadium from Midtown and you'd be right in the heart of the best part of NYC. Staying in the Bronx means you'd have to commute to all the "tourist" areas and you'll end up spending a lot of time ridding subways, busses or taking expensive cabs rather than enjoying all the City has to offer.

While the Bronx has many areas that would be perfectly fine to visit, I don't know that there are many/any "legitimate" hotels there.
If the issue is getting to Yankee Stadium, that's easy from Manhattan.
There are budget hotels in Manhattan that would probably be safer and better than anything they could find in the Bronx.

Stay in Manhattan near the B,D or 4 Subway. It's a quick and easy trip, and the trains are loaded with Yankee fans when travelling to and from the stadium.

DO NOT STAY IN THE BRONX..

The area around Yankee Stadium is very safe - on game days. The rest of the time, not really.

You can get to Yankee Stadium via subway fairly easily.

I'm not aware of any tourist hotels in the Bronx. The only one I've seen are in the rent by the hour category. There may be 1 or 2 tourist places - but not near Yankee Stadium (which is quite a downscale area except right around the Stadium).

You're much better off staying in Manhattan and taking the subway to the game. Or staying in Westchester and driving in (but I've heard they're raising minimum parking fees to $40 this year and traffic is especially hideous due to construction of the new stadium.)

If you'll be in NYC for things besides the game don;t consider staying anyplace but Manhattan.
