I haven't been to Sarasota yet but am going next month, too. From the web research I've done, if my son was still that age I would go on the "Sea Life Encounter Cruise" that Sarasota Bay Explorers runs out of the Mote Aquarium.

Been going to Siesta Key for 30 years. Love it. Have either stayed at Midnight Cove or (currently) Dolphin Bay so don't know much about other places. Do know that it's probably tough to get less than 2 weeks at a lot of places in March. Can tell you about restaurants and other stuff though. On the key check out Captain Curts (on Midnight Pass Road just south of Stickney Point road - can't miss it) for casual seafood. Lot's of little places in the Village at the north end of the key - Egg Harbor is good for breakfast. Go to the Columbia on St. Armand's Key. Mote Aquarium just north of there between it and Longboat. Rent a boat and cruise the intercoastal and the canals of Siesta Key. Definitely go to Phillipi Creek Oyster Bar - on 41 north of Stickney Point Road a couple miles - casual seafood - great. You'll LOVE the beach - white sand - long walks. Go to the Point of Rocks early in the morning for good shelling. Have fun!
