staying in san diego

we are two British couples coming to san diego for the first time in late august staying for three days then moving on to vegas. We want to stay near shops, resturants, and attractions, any ideas?

What's your budget?
Will you have a car?
Do you need to be on the water?
Luxury, budget or mid-range accommodations?

August is usually pretty busy in San Doiego. If you could stay in the Gaslamp area that would be best. Lots of restaurants, shops and the trolley to get around. There is an Embassy Suites on Market St you might try it
