Staying in Kailua-Kona or Wailoku area?
Hi,
Which place is more recommended--Kailua-Kona or the Wailoku area? I am traveling w/ husband and 4 kids (ages 1,5,7,10). Is the Kona area loud & party-scene-ish? Is Wailoku too far away from beaches & snorkeling areas? Are accommodating in Wailoku newer and have a/c's? We would be looking at renting through VRBO as we are on a budget.
Any helpful tips would be appreciated!

busymomof4, I don't know of any area of Big Island that I would call "loud & party-scene-ish." I'm not familiar with "Wailoku" but Kailua-Kona is a great area to stay when you're watching your budget (as opposed to the Kohala-Kona area.)

Do you mean Waikoloa? Wailoku is a gulch on Molokai?
Waikoloa is a high-end resort area full of great hotels and condos. There are multiple small beaches there.
And as a follow-up- yes you should get A/C in August if you are anywhere on the Kona coast.

If you are planning to go to Maui, I'd suggest Kihei over Wailoku.
As for the BI, I have stayed in Kona (Royal Kona Resort) and also on the Kohala Coast (Hilton Waikoloa). Kona has many places you can walk to. On the Kohala Coast you are more out of town but the Hilton has beautiful grounds.

beth_fitz- I believe the OP asked about Waikoloa on Hawaii.
I think you are referring to the town of Wailuku, near Kahalui on Maui. The only Wailoku I can find is a gully on the south side of Molokai.
