Staying in Falls Church -- convenient for sightseeing D.C.?
 

Would it be convenient to stay in Falls Church, which is 10 miles from D.C. center? The hotel website says they provide free shuttle to the Metro West Falls Church station. Is that a convenient stop to go into D.C. for sightseeing? Or I should check for hotels in the heart of the city?

I would check for hotels in DC, Crystal City, VA and Rosslyn, VA within walking distance of a Metrorail station.

The only reason I can think of that anyone would stay in Falls Church (unless wanting to be near something there) is if they absolutely could not afford a hotel in any of the above listed places.

I totally agree with vjplovesitaly. There's nothing wrong with Falls Church itself; it's just that's it's pretty far out for commuting to D.C. for sightseeing, particularly if you have to take a shuttle to the Metro station.
FYI, in case you are not familiar with "Crystal City" and "Rosslyn", they are not actual cities in Virginia, but rather areas of Arlington, Virginia which are close to D.C. and have many hotels near their respective Metro stations.

It's only 10-15 minutes more to DC from the WFC station than it would be from Rosslyn or CC. If the hotel is significantly cheaper than others, and you can call ahead to have the shuttle waiting at the Metro on return, there's no reason to spend more on what is really just a place to return to at night to sleep.

I wouldn't call it "convenient" for sightseeing: you'll have a shuttle ride, a pretty long Metro ride, plus some walking once you get into the city, and the reverse of that at the end of a long day. I would always opt to stay in the city, as IMO that maximizes your tourist experience, walk to dinner in an interesting neighborhood, and so on. But as weimarer says, if it's a real bargain, it may be worth it to you, and indeed, Falls Church is a perfectly nice area.
