Staying in Brooklyn for Dec weekend advise.
 

I have been to NYC many times and have always stayed in Midtown, but this trip I am traveling with 2 friends who have never been to NYC and want to go visit the city at Christmas time. They want to see as much as possible in the short time we have there. Well, I checked all my usual hotels and the prices are outragous for this weekend. So I booked the Marriott at the Brookly Bridge. Is this okay? The hotel looks nice, but will the commute on Sat and Sunday be manageable/doable? I use the subway all the time but is this location just to far out?

Also I want to take them to the Christmas Show at Radio City. I can't get tickets because the brokers have blocked seats, is there a way to get tickets for Dec 11 other than ticketmaster. I don't want to pay super high broker prices. Ticketmaster says the brokers may release tickets nearer the date, I just need to keep checking. - does this sound correct? Is there a local NY outlet for tickets I can tap. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Have never seen the hotel so can;t comment - but the location is convenient for subway to Manhattan - much better than those poor souls who decide to stay in New Jersey - and then have to deal with crossing the Hudson twice a day.

Am not aware of any local outlet for tickets - and the weekend you're looking at is prime time - so doubt if you'll be able to get any discounts.

OK Born and raised in Brooklyn here, so I'll try to help....Had some people stay at that Marriott and it is very nice and you are within walking distance of almost every subway line. (4 blocks walk the most) Plus it's 1 or 2 stops from Manhattan on the subway (depending on which train you take) so the commute will be painless.

If you want to check for tickets for Radio City, Ticketmaster does release tickets sporadically, you do have to keep checking. I managed to score my Yankee tickets this way. (I kept trying and eventually tickets were released) although you may have a hard time getting 2 or more tickets next to each other. Your other options would be to try Ebay or craigslist for tickets.

There's also now a water taxi service that goes on both the east and west sides of Manhattan. Don't know how far the hotel is from the water taxi stop but here's their website

The hotel gets mostly good reviews on tripadvisor. There's mention of a pool if you want to bring suits. Missjanna was wondering if you know whether this is this the old St George hotel?

Travelsis, there are some really great restaurants in that area (considered DUMBO/Brooklyn Heights) including the often mentioned Grimaldi's for pizza and the River Cafe.

I don't quite understand what your problem with NY Waterway service is. You think it is preferable to stay in Brooklyn (I was born there & have NO problem with it) and have to deal with the subway into Manhattan, rather than to stay in an all-suite hotel, get free breakfast every morning, walk out the door, cross the narrow street & take a 5 minute ferry ride?

Have no problem with NY Waterway. Just think its much easier to already be in the subway system - which can take you anywhere than to take a boat to a shuttle or a bus to a subway to a ?? to get to the final destitnation.

Also, most people who stay in Jersey don;t stay right at the ferry - they stay in places requiring buses to ferries to etc. etc. - IMHO just way too much trouble.

Sheraton in Lincoln Harbor is literally a few steps from the ferry.

Was at a conference at the Brooklyn Bridge and thought it was perfectly fine. Neighborhood is a little sketchy, but not dramatic, but close to the city.

Mclaurie, I believe the St. George hotel was located on Montague Street in the Heights.

No, the St. George Hotel is on Henry Street. Except it's not a hotel...it's been college dormitories for quite a few years.

I've stayed at the Brooklyn Marriott a number of times. It is a very nice, new (about 5 years old??) hotel and convenient to the subway. Also a nice little (very short) walk to Brooklyn Heights -- check it out if the weather is OK. If you walk down Montague Street you come to a park/ river walk area which offers a spectacular view of Manhattan. As another poster noted-- also near to Junior's Restaurant-- they ship cheesecake all over the world. (Yum!!)
