stay near newark or nyc
Hi
We are coming to New York in August with 2 kids 15 and 12 flying into Newark int.
I was wondering where should we stay - near newark or in nyc near the sites. we want to do the usual i think, stateu of liberty, times square,empire state etc.

EXACT dates and nightly budget is necessary to give specific recommendations. Will the kids share a bed? I guess "we" is two parents?
"Near the sites" is meaningless. It is a city with things to see in various locations throughout.

we are staying from the 13th to 16 august..
kids can share a bed yes..we have a budget of about $100 a night
really do not know where to stay hence i put near the sites..where would you recommend?

I think you'll be unable to find anything in that price range anywhere near New York City, but possibly you will in a distant suburb. New York is a very expensive city, and a "standard" (i.e. not disgusting) hotel room will easily run $200-300 a night and up (way up). Looking on Kayak.com, there is nothing below $152 a night (and remember there are major hotel taxes in New York that add up -- about 15% or 16% I think). I'm sorry, but your budget is just not realistic.

Unfortunately, there is no place in or anywhere near NYC where you will get a room for 4 people for $100 per night. Even a bed and locker in a shared room in a hostel is about $40 per night - or $160 for 4 people.
I think to find something at that price you would have to go to very distant suburbs and then pay high fares on buses and trains - and spend 3 or more hours a day trekking back and forth.
In low season - Jan - you can get a double room for about $100 in a modest hotel. But in summer and for 4 people anything less than $300 per night will be a bargain.
As for staying near Newark - parts of the city are very high risk and the lodgings near the transit to the city are going to be way above your price.
Staying neat the airport would require you to take a hotel shuttle back to the airport, then the AirTrain to the regular train and then pay for train tickets to get into NYC (not cheap). And I don't think you will get an airport hotel for that price.
People often recommend Long Island City (about 20 minutes from Manhattan by subway) as a good budget choice, but for your dates Country Inn and Suites (well recommended) has a room for 4 people for $189 per night - about $215 with taxes. This will let you get back and forth to Manhattan for only $2.50 per person each way - much cheaper than staying in Jersey.
Suggest you look at kayak.com to see what they have - but do be very careful about location. Some hotels they list are more than an hour from the city - with expensive multiple change transit in between. (If you are paying $25 per person to get back and forth - much better to stay nearer and use the money on a decent motel).
Also - before committing funds come here and ask about the specific hotel and location - there are some that are very cheap because they generally rent by the hour.

If you mean $100 per person per night you can probably find something but as noted above there is no way you will find a place fit for for human habitation for anywhere close to $100/night for all four of you. You may well need two rooms for four people, by the way. Sorry to be a wet blanket, but better you find out in advance! From where are you coming?

I'm afraid that $100 per night isn't even remotely pssible anywhere within 40 or so mies from NUC except in a fleabag motel tat accepts long term homeless guests. Not in Newark or NYC. Unfortunately, I don't know if Long Island City is really feasible fir you since you are flying into Newark.
But if you stay at a EWR airport hotel realize that transport into Manhatten is $14 per person each way per day. And buses or terrains from NJ cost between $4 and $10 per person each way for one ride. Then you have to pay for transport within NYC itself.
If your budget is really this tight, I'm not sure you will be able to swing this vacation, so please do look at all your costs to see what s reasonable and accepted before you book anything no refundable.

Agree with Dough that if your $100 per night is really fixed you might not have enough money overall for a trip to NYC. Not sure where you are from - but you might find that prices for everything are higher than you had anticipated.
Granted there are things to do that are free/low cost and you can grab street food for some quick lunches on the run. But do you have enough set aside for local transportation, a couple of decent dinners and entrance fees for those places that are not free?

Hmm, staying in mid-week, but prime tourist time: check out hotels in Weehauken NJ right on the Hudson offering a fab view of mid-town. They will not be close to $100/night, however. Ferries across Hudson are relaxing, and connect you to free shuttles in Manhattan; the hotels might offer them inclusive w/ room. You could take the light rail from EWR to Seacaucus then taxi to hotel. You do not want Newark hotels. Another option might be hotels in Seacaucus which hopefully would provide shuttles to lightrail which would take you into Penn Station at 32d St @ 7th Ave. (one block from Macys on Herald Sq.). Try Hotwire and plug in requested rate and your dates and see what comes up.

Yes - but when checking these out you need to determine the daily roundtrip cost for transit into the city for 4 people. I believe the ferries are more than $10 - so $80 per day for 4 people.
You really need to either up your budget or pick a different time of year (jan or feb).
