Stay in/near Gettysburg to also see Harpers Ferry/Antietnam?
Is it a good idea to stay in or near Gettysburg and make day trips to Harpers Ferry and Antietnam? Hate to keep changing hotels if can avoid it and just drive instead (hopefully not more than an hour each way). Would 3 full days be enough to see these sites? Trying to finalize my itinerary and have decided to try to include these places before heading back to IAD for flt home. Thanks in advance for your help.

I am into relaxing these days but you are cutting it close. With three days, I would recommend 2 @ Gettysburg and 1 at Harpers Ferry and leave Antietnam for the next trip.Just in case you are going the weekend of 11/18, don't miss the Gettysburg Address Anniversary Ceremonies-the luminary lighting is tremdous.

Definitely add a day. Antietam and Gettysburg are less than an hour apart, so having a hotel in Gettysburg should work fine for you. You can do either Antietam or Harpers Ferry in half a day. You may want to see other sights around Harpers Ferry too though. It would be preferable not to do them the same day though. If you do opt for changing hotels, Shepherdstown, WV is a good spot.

Since my flight doesn't leave til 6pm on my last day should/could I do either Antietam or Harpers Ferry on way to airport? Also, how many days if I just do Gettysburg? I'm thinking 2 full days?
Thanks for the help.

Hagerstown, Frederick or even Thurmont MD would be a good home base with no hotel/motel changes. You would be looking at an hour or so drive to everywhere you plan on visiting... I lived in Frederick for years and it has a lot history itself.

Yes, 2 full days minimum to really appreciate Gettysburg. I agree that Frederick is a very good option, given your goals. I always love going out around sunrise while in Gettysburg, which is a little harder from Frederick, but I agree with RedRock that you should at least consider it. It is about half an hour from Gettysburg. If you do one before the airport, make it Antietam, which opens at 8:30. Get there first thing. 4-5 hours should be enough for a decent tour. I think it is easier to plan timewise than Harpers Ferry.
