Stay in Savannah or Beaufort

My girlfriend and I are doing a gals 4-day weekend in early Feb.-flying from Minneapolis into Atlanta and then driving south. We know we want to shop/sightsee in both Savannah and Beaufort. Problem is, I don't know which city we should make our "base camp" in, such as, should we stay in Savannah all 3 nights and drive over to Beaufort for a day or vice versa? We already have selected what accomodations we'd stay in for both places, depending on which one we choose. Beaufort is definitely cheaper, but I guess it depends on which place we'd like to spend the most time in. Any suggestions for us?

We have been to both many, many times and I would strongly suggest staying in Savannah (or maybe spending a night in Charleston). Beaufort is a small town, there is a main street with a few shops and a few decent restaurants, but I can't imagine an overnight there. When we visit Beaufort we arrive mid morning, shop a little, have some lunch and continue on to either Charleston or Savannah. I am curious....what specifically are you interested in Beaufort?

I agree with Aliska. You can experience Beaufort in 1/2 a day. Unless you a crave a VERY low-key vacation, I wouldn't stay here. Beaufort is lovely, but there's simply not much to do in comparison to Savannah or Charleston. I recommend making it a day-trip.

I agree. Beaufort is quite small and accomodations are limited. Stay in Savannah. You may find enough to do and see that you won't even have time for Beaufort. You could easily drive over for a few hours and see everything. Don't get me wrong, it's a nice place, but I can't imagine staying there for the four days.

Check and see if you can fly directly into Savannah. You would save yourself a boring drive from Atlanta to Savannah. It's Interstate all the way. Fast, but blah!

I used to live in Beaufort and agree with the above opinions that it is a lovely place with some interesting sites but it can easily be done in a day or less (the town itself). I would stay in Savannah and do Beaufort and environs as a day trip.

DITTO DITTO DITTO. Been there, done that, and after several hours in Beaufort you'll be anxious to get back to Savannah or better still, IMO, Charleston. Listen to GoTravel she's a great source of information and maybe can give you some tips on Savannah. She made our trip to Charleston very easy last year.

Thanks for the responses, that really helps. I guess I was looking at some of the waterfront vacation rentals in Beaufort and reading some things about how charming it is that I thought maybe we should spend more time there. I'd love to go to Charleston, but I'm thinking that that's probably more driving than we want to do. Maybe another long weekend there next year. I've never spent time in this area of the country - so I'm really looking forward to it.
