Stay in Georgetown or near Convention Center?
Going to DC in early June with a family of 4. We are from California. Debating on weather to stay at the Embassy Suites near the Convention Center...or a cute house in Georgetown. This is our first trip to DC and we plan to see the sights...White House, Capitol, museums etc. The advantage of the Embassy Suites is the breakfast and that it looks like walking distance to some of the places we want to visit.
Georgetown seems like a fun place to stay with the nightlife and shopping. However...getting to the sights would be more difficult. The plus is that there will be a washer/dryer and more room in the house.
Thanks!

The Embassy Suites, hands down. Proximate to all colors of Metro, walking distance to the Mall, White House and even the Capitol if you're hearty, heaps of good restaurants very nearby... no contest. However cute the house is, you won't be there much. And although Georgetown is a gorgeous neighborhood well worth a visit (I lived there and loved it), the inconvenience of reaching the sights you listed make it a poor choice for a first time tourist.

While Georgetown is a much nicer area to stay in, it's also much more inaccessible to the popular tourist sites. It's always better to stay in the middle where you can see a lot in less time. I tend to agree with NewbE that Georgetown is a part of DC that is better visited than as a spot to put down tourist roots (it's good for locals who want to be separate from the touristy, governmental parts of the capital, though).

Where did you get the idea he meant that, Dukey? I didn't mean that. I meant--well, what I said. If you have something to say about the relative cost of accommodation, why not say it directly? Unless you're just being nasty, of course. That couldnt be it, could it?

Agree with NewbE and Doug, Embassy Suites is far more conveniently located for the most visited spots than G/town.
There are lots of hotels in more interesting neighborhoods convenient to metro rail -- can you widen your search?
For G/town, nearest metro rail is Foggy Bottom. So you walk, Uber/taxi or take metro bus. DC traffic is legion. An underground option is good to have even if you don't use it.

I find Georgetown too far from places I want to see and, frankly, a bit too dominated by college life.
In contrast, the area around the Convention Center has a growing number of worthy restaurants, and as already noted, is convenient for Metro access -- to my thinking, the key to a successful visit to DC.
JMO!

Thanks for all your advice! Even though I would love to stay in Georgetown...I think we are going to stay around the Convention Center instead. It will be nice to have easy access to where we are staying and be walking distance to a lot of places on our list.
Will definitely spends some time in Georgetown though.
