Statosphere Tower hotel in Vegas
Hi! Anyone give me some info/clue about this hotel? I hear its at the end of the strip. I found a great rate of 55/night in March. If anyone has ever stayed here or perhaps works there I would appreciate any insight or comments. thanks!
|
It`s located too far away from the main section of the strip. You`d have to take a bus or drive to get to the Bellagio, Mirage, etc. Stay down where the action is.
|
I think many people would agree that $55 per night could only be described as daylight robbery for a stay at the Strat.
You don't mention whether your rates are midweek or weekend but I expect you should be able to get the same rate staying in a much better hotel in a more convenient location of the Strip. Pat is right, it is too far from the main area of the Strip and is considered one of the low-end Vegas Strip hotels. |
It's a long walk from the strip. You should look for deals at hotels on the strip and you'll find that they aren't too much more.
|
The Stratosphere IS on the Strip.
In fact it's the last major hotel on the north end of the Strip. I agree with all the above comments. Strat is not close to anything worth seeing on the Strip IMO. Rates are always low because that's what they have to do to fill rooms. The rooms are very basic, and if you could afford to stay nowhere else, they'd be fine. But the point is that for similar money you should be able to get a similar or better quality room in a much better location. |
The Stratosphere is considered to be on the North end of the Strip. It's way too far away really! Been there many times, and the walk from Circus Circus-which is the closest hotel to Stratosphere, is WAY long. If you are looking to get a cheap room, it's a decent place to stay if you are getting a car. You pay more generally to stay at the "name" hotels on the Strip, although many offer real reasonable rates from Sunday thru Thursday. Check their websites and then call them direct. I've gotten cheaper rates both on the phone and the sites! Enjoy the place-it's fun!!

$55 is not a great rate for the Strat.

blue,
i got a rate next month that is the equivalent of $19 a nite. because i'll be gambling and just need a place to sleep that's fairly close to the strip properties, the strat fit the bill nicely. if you plan to do anything other than catch a few z's at the hotel, suggest you bid on a four * for your dates in question after checking on the las vegas convention schedule. if your dates are flex going when there is a relatively light convention sched will save you bucks. go to biddingfortravel.com, click on the lv convention sched link and then bid on a 4* starting at or near the rates lisetd on that site as being awarded to successful bidders near to the dates you're going. |
I wouldn't advise my worst enemy to stay at the Stratosphere. As far as being on the Strip - it is only technically because it's on Las Vegas Blvd. But that's as far as it goes. It's a good ways from the Sahara - which is the last "real" hotel on that end of the Strip. Once you step out of the front door of the Stratosphere you are in one of the worst neighborhoods in Las Vegas. Drug delaers, cheap prostitutes, gang members, etc. frequent this area. Across the street from the Stratosphere is a Carl's Jr where there is constant police activity and numerous shootings. Denny's is near there too, where you can usually see bullet holes in their front windows. Just up the street from the Stratosphere are the cheap & cheesy motels with the hourly rates and adult movies.
Go back to the drawing board, so to speak, and I'm sure you'll come up with a better alternative. (Just don't fall for anything Circus Circus tries to sell you on that property either - it's nearly as bad as the Stratosphere but add a few thousand screaming kids ...) |
I'm probably going to Vegas next year too and was considering the Strat since I usually see rates for around 39/night,
not 55. Didn't realize the neighborhood was THAT bad! I stayed there a couple times in the 80's when it was Vegas World and did the long walk. Never felt unsafe. Sounds like it really went downhill. I will heed your advice. |
GoTribe, that brings back memories.
Do you remember those ads for Bob Stupak's Vegas World in the 1980's in which they stated they'd actually PAY YOU to stay there? Low room rate together with something like $75 in buffet coupons and match play vouchers actually made it a "free" stay if you only bet your vouchers and quit. Vegas World put the cheese in cheesy, with spacemen hanging from the ceiling, a tic-tac-toe playing rooster (who never lost), and all manner of goofy gimmicks. Vegas was a hoot back then (of a different sort). |
y'all need to grow some, if you know what i mean. oooh, there's a few bullet holes. oooh there's a shoot out. c'mon now, unless you're actually CAUGHT in the crossfire, what's a few bullets whizzing past your head?
|
But Flopmeister, I hear that nearby there is a Pink Pussycat, Playboy toy and boutique and tattoo parlors. Surely putting up with that's worse than a few flying bullets. :)
|
or worth a refund!! it's all about expectations. i'm staying at the strat next month. i have NO expectations. a pillow and a bed would be nice. not waking up dead would be nice, too!
|
The neighborhood isn't all that terrible. Granted, there's some rough turf in the area, but if you walk out the front and turn south down the strip, it's pretty much safe.
Groups of tourists make the walk every day. If everyone was dying, you would know. Just don't eat at the Carl's Jr! |
Sure, travleis, I remember those deals at Vegas World. We did it twice and enjoyed it. As jbee put it, maybe the key word is that GROUPS of travelers walk from the Strat every day. I wouldn't be alone and try it. Either it has gotten a lot worse over the years or we were oblivious to it back then, thinking Vegas was 'fantasyland'.

Thanks for all the info; Im just gathering some info on hotels in vegas. Ive never been to vegas before. Looks like ive stirred up a bees nest with the strat, hehe. How about Ballys? Southwest Vacations showed me a price of 1100 bucks for 2 R/T tickets from Bwi to Vegas and 5 nights at Ballys. This is thurs-mon stay in late March. Normally I see 250 a night at ballys. Still browsing......
|
Bally's has a much better location. It's centralized in the main part of the strip, so all the major casinos are within walking distance.
If you've never been to Vegas before, it would probably be a more pleasant visit if you chose Bally's. I'm not sure on the rate, but you've gone way up in quality and location!! Another bonus- Bally's is connected to Paris... It's a quick route to the Paris buffet... Mmmmm... =:) |
$250/nt on weeknights at Bally's is an outrageous price (unless you'll be there during major conventions and everything's already booked).
Bally's often has rates in the $69-89 range. It's a mid-priced hotel. A decent but not great airfare from BWI is $300. That would mean ~ 4500 for 5 nts at Bally's which is OK but not great. Always check the hotel's website carefully AND call and ask for their BEST rate on their toll free line. Than check Southwest's site to see if you can build your trip cheaper on your own. |
Thanks! & Merry Xmas!

You may want to check the Mirage and Treasure Island. They were both having low rated sue to th cancellation of the Siegfried and Roy show.

I think the trend above represents a degree of overkill. Based on BashfulLV's unbashful post above, I'd have hesitated to even go to the Stratosphere to see the views from the tower, and I'm glad I didn't miss them. I don't think people should be afraid to go there.
The views from the Tower are truly awesome, greatly different in the day and night, and I'd consider them a must especially on a first Vegas visit. I agree that the property is too isolated from anything else of interest, beyond any consideration of unpleasantness or danger, to recommend anyone walk to or from it. I took taxis to and from the property and never encountered anything unsavory. Taxis to leave were plentiful at the hotel door. I didn't stay there and so can't evaluate the accommodations, but the user reviews at Tripadvisor.com show that many people have had good experiences as guests there (among a much smaller number of detractors.) Some of the posters are genuinely enthusiastic about the hotel particularly at the price. Several mentioned that as well as using taxis, they found the nearby bus stop and parking to be very close, convenient, and safe. They said they preferred to save the money they would have spent on a better located hotel, take the bus to the strip, and spend those dollars on shows and restaurants. Others said they liked the casino at the Strat and were happy to return to it after more jammed, stuffy (in both senses), tighter-paying places on the Strip. I did gamble myself at the casino and while its decor was certainly nothing special, it was relatively light, large, airy and pleasant for a place with player-friendly table rules like the dark, smoky, jammed places downtown have. I enjoyed the opportunity for 10X odds craps, and while I'm not a slots player, I'd guess the comment frequently made on TripAdvisor that the slots seemed looser at the Strat than at the better located hotels down the Strip are accurate. I don't remember being made uneasy by anyone in the casino clientele, which seemed pretty midde-of-the-road. So I'd consider Bashful LV's post above a good advice not to stroll around the neighborhood, but the tower definitely is worth a trip there by some other means than foot, and the casino and hotel might be to you too. I'm not a shill for the place, but it seems to well suit some people at some times, and the Tower is genuinely terrific. It's already been in bankruptcy, and I'd hate to see it close (especially the Tower) due to exaggerated fearmongering. |
Thank you CalDC for the reply. I have heard the tower is the biggest and one of the best views in vegas. If not staying there at the hotel, the tower is certainly a must see! Frankly I dont know where people are seeing these low fares at any vegas hotels down on the main strip. Most are avg around 200/night. Perhaps Im looking at the wrong month? (March) Ballys is a mid-priced hotel travelis?
