Staten Island Ferry or Sunset Circleline Cruise
I had fully planned on the Staten Island ferry for a late afternoon/early evening roundtrip crossing. However, I came across more details on circleline's offerings, which include a sunset harbor cruise (2 hours). It sounds like it would be really a nice way to "end" our trip as I would plan it for the last evening. It starts at 7pm and ends at 9pm. Do you think we could still make it to the top of the ESB before they close at midnight?

I think your wasting your time on both the SI ferry and the circle line.
If you want to see the NYC skyline, walk across the Brooklyn Bridge and you'd get a great view. THere are also restruants over there and you could grab a bit to eat.

You should be able to make it to the ESB before midnight. I would make sure you get your tickets online so you won't have to wait too long. The boat leaves from the docks around 50th St, so I would get a cab from there or take the cross town bus, if cabs are scarce.
Have a great time.

You should be able to make it to the ESB, no problem. The cruise is nice, and the commentator will point out historical as well as current sites of interest along the way. It's very enjoyable and a nice way to finish off a visit to NYC.
