Staten Island Ferry
 

Going to NY near the end of next week (11/12/03-11/15/03) and thinking about taking the Staten Island Ferry.

Is it indoor or outdoor?
What about the different decks?
In other words will we freeze to get the view?

I'm no expert as I've only ridden once but the ferry that we rode on had a small amount of outdoor seating with the majority being indoors. Neither end of the boat was open for passengers so the only place to be outside was on the sides of the ferry. In Oct it was cold so bundle up. You'll want to be outside at least for a portion of the trip to get the best view.

Most of the seating is inside, but there is limited seating outside. There is also an upper deck and a lower deck, with room in front of the boat, however, due to the recent accident, most people are hesitant to stand in the front now. They also serve food and drinks (including Starbucks coffee and things) on the boat.

The temps are supposed to be in the 40's by next week, so it will be cold, plus the wind while travelling makes it even more so. But the view beats the cold any day of the week.

When you get on the boat walk towards the right hand side for the best views.

The ends of the Staten Island ferry ARE open on some decks and you can stand out there for unobstructed views. Most of the seating is inside.

A few weeks ago we rode it. On the upper enclosed deck they left a very large window area on the side open. Everybody sort of gathers around it for picture taking, so if it is too cold out on the front or back, this is the best alternative. Although I can't say that if it is really cold, they wouldn't also close that open area on the side.

You can ride indoors or outdoors, huge amounts of seating, get on the right side of the boat.

You are making this much more difficult than it is so don't fret the ride.
