I would have to say SC, more particularly Charleston, SC because that is where I am originally from. Atlanta, where I live now, is supposively pretty friendly for a large city. The people might be friendly, but we sure can not tell you how to get anyway in this city.

Judging from 2 cross country trips on Amtrak...the Empire Builder in the north and the Sunset Limited in the south...the most people who waved at the train were in....Texas.

I'm surprised nobody has said Hawaii. I never met such happy, relaxed people.

Well, since Massachusetts will soon allow Gay marriage and one definition of gay is "merry, lighthearted", wouldn't that make it the most friendly state?

Well no one has mentioned my state yet, so here's a vote for my adopted state----Montana. Have been in all 50 states and retired here!!

I found Americans generally friendly everywhereas opposed to Europeans who I find quite cold.

However in New Orleans I found the friendliest people. Maybe because they had indulged in some hurricanes? lol

btw I am Australian, lived in US for 4 years.
