For my former home:
"Massachusetts" by the BeeGees (sickening)
For my current home "I Love LA" by Randy Newman (played after every goal at LA Kings hockey games -- you remember hockey?)

Random cities - Meet Me in St. Louis, Streets of Philadelphia (Did Springsteen win an Oscar for this?), Little Old Lady from Pasadena.

Okay, back to work. Thanks for the diversion! I'm sure I'll think of more.

"Welcome to the Hotel California"
Can't forget that one bye the Eagles!

And of course this has already been mentioned:
"California, here I come
Right back where I started from.
Where bowers of flowers bloom in the spring.
Each morning at dawning,
Birdies sing an' everything.
A sunkist miss said, "Don't be late"
That's why I can hardly wait.
Open up that Golden Gate,
California here I come."

Though my favorite California city song (You've got to experience this one at either Beach Blanket Babylon or on the giant pipe organ while attending a Saturday night movie at the Castro Theater!!):

San Francisco, open your golden gate
You'll let nobody wait outside your door
San Francisco, here is your wanderin' one
Saying I'll wander no more.

Other places only make me love you best
Tell me you're the one in all the golden west
San Francisco, I'm coming home again
Never to roam again...

San Francisco, right when I arrive
I really come alive...
And you will laugh to see me,
Perpendicular, hanging on a cable car

San Francisco, let me beat my feet
Up and down Market Street
I'm gonna climb Nob Hill, just to watch it get dark
From the top of the mark

There's Brooklyn Bridge, London Bridge,
And the Bridge of San Louis Rey
But the only bridge, that's a real gone bridge,
Is the bridge accross the bay

San Francisco, I'm coming home again,
Never to roam again, by gum
San Francisco, I don't mean Frisco
San Francisco, here I come!

For Michigan, how about "Detroit City Rock" or something by Eminem or Kid Rock or Motown.

James Taylor spent most of his youth in my hometown of Chapel Hill, NC. In his song "Copperline" he sings about Morgan Creek a small creek in CH. Last year, the town of Chapel Hill renamed the bridge over Morgan Creek in honor of him.

In the Elvis song "The Promised Land" he is on a road trip starting of in Norfolk, through Raleigh and onto the promised land (Las Vegas).

Lots of great location songs, but the ultimate might be "I've Been Everywhere" by Johnny Cash. Hope this comes through correctly!

I was totin' my pack along the long dusty Winnemucca road
When along came a semi with a high canvas covered load
"If you're goin' to Winnemucca, Mack with me you can ride
And so I climbed into the cab and then I setteled down inside
He asked me if I'd seen a road with so much dust and sand
And I said, "Listen! I've traveled every road in this here land!"

I've been everywhere, man
I've been everywhere, man
Crossed the deserts bare, man
I've breatherd the mountain air, man

Kokomo by The Beach Boys and anything Buffett reminds me of the Florida Keys.

"Do You Believe" by Cher always reminds me of NYC. Took my sis-in-law to NYC for her very first trip. As we were barreling down the FDR on the way down to the World Trade Center and Wild Blue at the top it was playing. My sis turned around in the cab and said "look!". It was the most gorgeous shot of the NYC skyline lit up behind us.

Detroit Rock City is KISS, I believe....

Not Michigan per se, but America by Simon & Garfunkel "It took me four days to hitch hike from Saginaw...."

Aretha always reminds me of Detroit. They don't call it Motown music for nothing you know!!

New Mexico has three official state songs - O Fair New Mexico (written by Elizabeth Garrett, daughter of Pat Garrett of Billy the Kid fame), Land of Enchantment by Michael Martin Murphy, and a Spanish-language one, but I can't think of its name.

Dancin in the Street has lots of cities' names also.

Motown is vastly underrated today. I think old Motown sounds are the best.

PBS has had some great revivals in the last 3 or 4 years. They sell the tapes.

It is amazing to me how often New York New York gets played at important moments NOT in New York. It was played at midnight on New Year's Eve when I was in Venice, Italy... it was the closing song at a wedding in London....I do love it and don't get tired of it if it's sung well But I think New York State of Mind is probably my favorite.

"Some folks like to get away, take a holiday from the neighborhood.
Hop a flight to Miami Beach or to Hollywood.
But I'm taking a Greyhound on the Hudson River Line
I'm in a New York state of mind..."

Anybody see the Kennedy Center honors last night with Billy performing for Elton's award?

I'm with you all on Motown too and beloved Ray Charles and Georgia.

A couple of my favorites not mentioned yet, for the musicality and sentiment, not because I'm from either place are:

Do You Know What It Means to Miss New Orleans? I've heard a lot of versions - I think I like Harry Connick Jr's most.

Alabama Jubilee, again performed by a number of people but Roy Clark's version is my favorite.

One I think is underappreciated that someone else did mention is the Beach Boys "Kokomo".

Don't forget Colorado. John Denver's tune has got to be one of the prettiest state-related songs...

He was born in the summer of his 27th year
Comin’ home to a place he’d never been before
He left yesterday behind him, you might say he was born again
You might say he found a key for every door

When he first came to the mountains his life was far away
On the road and hangin’ by a song
But the string’s already broken and he doesn’t really care
It keeps changin’ fast and it don’t last for long

But the Colorado rocky mountain high
I’ve seen it rainin’ fire in the sky
The shadow from the starlight is softer than a lullabye
Rocky mountain high (high Colorado) rocky mountain high (high Colorado)....

Lou & Peter Berryman, a folk group we like, have a song titled, "Your State's Name Here" that fits any state.
