Starting in New England with two weeks off in February, to where would you drive and why?

We're batting all sorts of ideas around as possibilites for a winter vacation and I thought I'd come ask the experts for your suggestions.

We'd like to drive to our destination(s) and keep expenses reasonable. We're thinking somewhere warm and sunny and with interesting things to do/see. That sounds like it probably means Florida.

Where would you go?

If you really want to drive, head to the southern half of Florida, anywhere south of an east-west line through Vero Beach.

You can indeed make some budget flights to the Bahamas if you search for bargains.

I think I'd do a cost-conscious two pronged plan: one for flying to the Bahamas, the other for driving to Florida. Look around for the best deals and make your decision. Don't be picky about exactly where you stay in either place; they'll all be a lot nicer than New England in winter.

That sounds like a great idea, Wayne. I confess to being rather at a loss as to where even to begin with the Bahamas prong, though. Er, Fodor's Destinations page does sound like a good starting point, come to think of it. ;-)

One of the problems will be that there is no guarantee you will have warm weather, but in the caribbean you will...

Truly, unless you are set on a driving vacation, I'd look for a decent package deal to somewhere in the Caribbean or Mexico! That's the surest way to get palm trees and sunny weather.
