Near the Highline, recently extended, I second Aduchamps recommendations of Cook Shop and Red Cat.
but, I'm still crying cuz I have NO chance to eyeball the newly sleek MTT whilst he and the MTT4 are in the Big Apple, due to long planned trip to France. Boo hoo. (Not canceling, you'll notice, lol)

The highline is fun to walk at any time of the day. You should combine this walk with a trip to the Chelsea Market, which is always fun to walk through. If you walk North - South, you end up at the Standard Hotel where you can refresh yourself in their Biergarten, always a scene and lots of fun. Lots of great restaurants in the area, really like Scarpetta if you are up for some really great Italian food.
For rooftops at that time of year a lot of them will have closed (but a lot depends on the weather too), but 230 Fifth (which I've mentioned before), stays open all year long and supplies heat lamps, blankets and robes.
Hope we have a GTG, if it's the Campbell Apt., that would be real convenient for my commuting purposes

We are certainly amenable, however I know it can be a pain to set these things up, so hopefully a local is up to the challenge. Is a Thursday night good? How about Thursday, October 6 at the Campbell Apartment at Grand Central? If someone wants to set it up, we will be there with martini shakers on. I better get my good clothes dry-cleaned for this one!

Campbell Apartment is certainly an attractive spot. But it's deafeningly noisy and the service is abysmal. We had trouble with a party of four; I can only imagine how their service would be for a large party.
I recommend an UES Italian where a group of former AOL travel forum posters get together several times a year: Toscano's (formerly Totonno's) at 80th and Second. We were there (a group of over 20) and they did a great job. Salads, pizzas, cheeses, all to share community-style. We all agreed we had a good time and our group is planning to return there in the Fall.

bspielman, that sounds good, too (gets rave reviews). We will go wherever the group wants to go (if there is a group). I can see why these things are hard to put together. The four of us are equal opportunity imbibers, so we will go wherever the majority thinks is the best. Maybe just meeting for cocktails and appetizers would be easier than a total food extravaganza. I don't know.
If no one takes the lead (and believe me I can see why no one would want to try and coordinate this), as the time approaches, we'll just put on the board what bar we will be in on October 6, and if people want to show up, that would be fine, too. Hope it all works out. And lincasanova, I hope you can make it from Spain. I promise I will not run with the bulls at the GTG.

Someone has suggested La Fonda del Sol. Looks like it might work... Grand Central location, tapas, looks like lots of space. http://www.patinagroup.com/restauran...taurants_id=19

Since it has been a year since I last made my restaurant choices, I was wondering if Lucien (14 First Ave. (1st St.) would still be a good choice for a French bistro experience (NYC style)? Any other comparably priced French bistros that you can recommend would be appreciated. The other two restaurants I have chosen are:
Trattoria Toscana on Carmine St.
North Square Restaurant & Lounge on Waverly Place
Anyone been to any of these recently? I still have three more to choose from after this for our six night stay. Thanks.

Likewise for Trattoria Toscana.
MaiTai, you might want to take a look at www.savored.com. For a $10 booking fee, you can snag a 30% or so (depends on the place) discount on food and beverages at places such as "21," Le Cirque, db Bistro moderne (very French, in answer to your question, but despite its name, much better than a bistro--Daniel Boulud's food), and others.

Not to worry. I am going to plan a trip in October to Cincinnati/Chicago, hopefully around those dates, and if a stopover works out, fine.. but don't manage dates because of me. I was just curious if this "October 6th" date was more or less what the group is shooting for!

Maitaitom we had a fabulous meal at buddakan which isn't far from the high line. Buddakan served what I would call Asian Fusion food and the restaurant itself is gorgeous. Won't it get dark fairly early in October? I wonder if the high line might be a bit pointless in the evening, although the city lights would be pretty. We walked the high line one morning at about 10am and it was lovely then.
