Standing on a Corner, Winslow AZ
Does anyone know what there is anything to see at the "Standing on the Corner" park? I read that the buildings were destroyed by fire last year and the statue was surrounded by fences. Is this still the case?
I am trying to decide whether to stop off in Winslow or make a small detour here to stop for lunch/photos etc. I am not aware that there is much else in the town itself. |
Go to Meteor Crater if you haven't been before.

Not sure about recent events re the fire, but before then it was definitely worth at least a pit stop for a photo op. There's a cute little downtown with kitchy shops and an old historic hotel (name escapes me). Easy on and off I 40, too.
Holbrook, AZ is nearby also, where you can sleep in a concrete teepee on historic route 66, the Wigwam Motel. Wouldn't want to do it more than one night but it's immaculate and good for some memory making giggles :D |
Long before there was a park, we stopped in Winslow because DH wanted a picture of him standing on a corner. Right on main street is the Winslow Post Office which made a great picture. We haven't been back since they built the park.

We made the mistake of staying in Winslow overnight, rather than just stopping for the photo op. Don't know about fences around the statue. But it was worth a quick stop and photo two summers ago. You're very close to the Petrified Forest; we wished we had stayed in Holbrook, just outside, and been at that National Park right when it opened.

Gee, I bicycled thru Winslow in both 1990 & 91 and didn't see any park. Was it built since then, or did the sound of these old wheels make me crazy?
I thought it to be a rather "blah" town, or at least the part that we rode thru. I also bicycled to the Meteor Crater, which I think was 6mi each way off our route, and felt it a big rip off. Impressive that something made such a big hole, but not much other than that. The movie "Starman" (which I'd seen beforehand) was on TV a few days after our visit and it was fun to see where we had been, including the diner just off the interstate. Definately do the Painted Forest and also stop at the tourist trap store between Winslow & Holbrook --- its name escapes me now, but I'd consider it to be Arizona's version of "South of the Border" ... you'll see the jackrabbit signs for miles. We stayed at a Comfort Inn in Holbrook, but passed by the Wigwam, and I would stay at the Wigwam if I ever stayed in Holbrook again. |
Painted Desert! (I guess I'm still crazy) but those who went to Petrified Forest said it was great too.

Been there and it was fun. There were no fences around the statue, so got my picture taken staning right next to him.
Here is the web site for the park (not really a park, just a corner. But the building was something to see. http://www.standinonthecorner.com/ The web site doesn't give any additional info, so no idea what the status is. Just across the street is a shop that sells route 66 things |
"Well, I'm a standing on a corner
in Winslow, Arizona and such a fine sight to see It's a girl, my Lord, in a flatbed Ford slowin' down to take a look at me" Have you seen her? ((c)) |
What is the statue?
|
It is a statue of a guy with a guiter. Copy and paste this web site to your address window.

Thanks all for the replies. Time and route permitting we'll fit in a stop in Winslow. It sounds like it'll only need to be a quick stop in the town as there doesn't sound to be very much else there.
I'm glad I started this thread as I'm definitely thinking of trying to stay at the Wigwam Motel in Holbrook which I'd not seen before. It looks like Holbrook will set us up nicely to see a few things in the area the next day before moving on to Canyon de Chelly. MikeP - have you been since the fire last year or was your trip before that? I'm still trying to work out what the current situation is and whether some of the area is still fenced off or not. |
tries 2 .... "relax and take it easy"
|
Hi W2T,
No, my trip was before that. The web site has a "contact us" area, so you might try that for an update. But I suspect they still have it fenced off, since they haven't given any other update. |
I wrote to the e-mail address quoted on the site mentioned above (on 20 Decemeber) and have just received a reply (within days of my trip!).
Hi. The park is still fenced off but 2 panels of fence have been shortened to be able to get pictures. We are anxious to get the park open again but the issues are with the City of Winslow and the owner of the wall with the mural on it. You can write to the City Admin. City of Winslow 21 Williamson Ave. Winslow, AZ 86047 let him know you are concerned. |
