St. Michaels, MD, things to do, boat trips, etc
 

We're staying in St. Michaels for three days beginning this Sunday, and I'd like to get suggestions on things to do. We've been there a couple times before but don't know the area well. We're interested in art, historic towns, general exploring, and my wife especially likes boat trips and boating.

historic towns--st. michaels, easton and oxford are all close to one another and have beautiful historic districts with renovated homes, quiet streets and shops. the historical society is in easton and they have a few tours. http://www.hstc.org/ all three towns are worth a wander around, exploring the differences. st. michaels has a walking tour online at http://www.stmichaelsmd.org/about/tour.html

art--easton has the biggest art scene. there are a number of art galleries and the academy art museum http://www.art-academy.org/

since you enjoy boating, you definitely need to get out on the water. it is the best way to see the area. for boat trips, you have a number of different options. check out http://www.stmichaelsmd.org/lodging/...attraction.asp. a skipjack cruise is great, i've personally been on the hm krentz and the owner is great.

if you enjoy kayaking or canoeing, you can rent boats at a couple different places. as you turn onto rt 33 from the bypass, you'll see easten shore adventures on the right. you can easily stop by there to see what they offer.

i'd also recommend the little ferry ride from oxford to bellevue which is about 5-7 miles from st. michaels. it takes 9 cars at a time. and you could always leave your car in bellevue, wander around oxford on foot and take the ferry back.

the chesapeake bay maritime museum in st. michaels is wonderful and definitely worth a stop.

We're just back from 3 great days in St. Michaels, and I have a few suggestions. We stayed at the Wade Points Inn, and its a neat and unusual place, especially if you stay in the original house, built in 1819. The new building (the Kemp house or wing)is modern and much like other large hotel rooms, but the Victorian wing of the old house has smallish, fairly bare, spotlessly clean rooms with painted wood floors and mostly disconnected bathrooms (that is, it's your bath but you have to go down the hall to reach it). There are some ensuite bathrooms as well. There's no air conditioning in the public rooms of the old house but only the bedrooms. The great thing is the screened porches and lawns, which front on the bay. The latter, plus the complete privacy (it's about five miles south of St. Michaels) make it a wonderful place to relax--or kayak, fish, etc. Much like staying in a 19th or early 20th century guest house, which it originally was.

An extraordinary restaurant in the area is the Robert Morris Inn in Oxford, especially the seafood au gratin. And a good quality antique shop in St. Michael's is London.
