St Louis Weekend

Will be spending a weekend in St. Louis next month. Never been there - any NICE hotel suggestions, good restaurants, not to be missed attractions??

I love visiting St.Louis. All of the museums are free!! Not to miss the science museum(incredible, very interactive, best I've been to in the world) I really loved the botanical gardens too. If youre into beer there's always budweiser, I found it a rainy dayfiller but wasn't too impressed. The arch is a must - the museum and trip inside are very informational. There was a great exhibit on African American Images in the Art Museum but if there's no good exhibit I dont recommend it. have fun!

Hello
I agree, check out the Gateway Arch/ Monument to Westward expansion. The ride to the top is alittle scary though. You sit inside a small globe with 4 other people to get to the top. It doesn't go straight up and down its goes up at an angle, which corrects every few seconds. The view from the top is worthwhile. Get there before you want to go and reserve tickets for later in the day. It usually gets sold out by mid-morning! The botanical gardens are nice, there's a lovely Japanese garden, there and some other interesting features, especially the dome. The Adam's Mark Hotel is supposedly one of the best in town. If you like Thai food, try one of the Thai restaurants in town, I went to all of them and they were all great! Try the world's only floating McDonalds restaurant, on the Mississippi, for something different. The restaurant is on a modified riverboat, quite unique! Not far from the arch. Hope this inspires you!!!!

The Arch is a must...agreed. We went to this great southern type seafood restaurant in the back of Union Square, its right on this big manmade pond, tons of fun. Anyway Union Square is definitely worth a visit, even if you don't buy anything (it's a fantastic mall). Lot's of beer.

Try your luck at the Casino Queen riverboat.

Spent last weekend in St. Louis downtown Holiday Inn for about $100, nice room, 18th floor with balcony view of arch. We like the night life so we could walk at night. We drove to St. Charles just a fifteen minute drive to a quaint little town restored from old beginnings. There is a winery, a Lewis and Clark museum, a park with view of river, and dozens of little craft shops, places to eat. The roads are original brick so you get a sense of history. In St. Louis, we also toured the arch but it's hot in the little capsule-like elevator that takes you up. The museum and Omnimax theater there is better. We ate filet mignon for $11 at Lafite's downtown. Also, downtown, the old spaghetti factory is cheap and very interestingly decorated.

I live in St. Louis and it truly is a great city to travel to. First of all if you love Italian food this is one of the best places to eat. Toasted ravioli was invented here. Try Charlis Gittos downtown restaurant, not too far from the ballpark. This is one of Tony Lasorda's favorite places to eat. The Regal on the riverfront has a restaurant that revolves at the top of the hotel. Great brunch on Sundays. The Magestic hotel is a quaint place to stay> I don't know the prices. Of course see the arch, science center, the planitarium has laserium shows in the evening. St. Charles is great for shopping and the winery there has a nice restaurant. If you come near Halloween, Six Flags has fright nights, which are fun. If you like theater, the Fox is a great old theater that has been refurbished and usually has plays and broadway type musicals there. The best place for frozen yogurt(not ice cream) is Ted Drewes on Chippewa. Hope this helps.

I agree that Charlie Gitto's is a good place for casual Italian food, but on a game night, get there by 5:00 or expect to wait for a table. The museum in the base of the Arch is well worthwhile as a brushup on St. Louis's role in the nation's history but forego the ride to the top of the arch unless the weather is clear, it's not windy (It sways!), and you know what you're looking at when you gaze out over the city. The Botanical Gardens are great at any season, and Forest Park has a number of attractions: the Zoo, Science Center (parking is free on the Forest Park side, but you pay if you park across the highway--an enclosed walkway between the two buildings crosses above the highway, so no problem getting from one side to the other), the Art Museum, and the Jewel Box (which has floral displays), among other things. There are often sports events available in town as well. And there is usually some form of stage production showing. The Fox Theatre is a fabulously refurbished building, actively used now for top name shows--lots of fun to walk through if you have a chance. St. Louis offers something for everyone, every taste, every age range. Take your pick, and have fun.
