How far in advance do you have to purchase the tickets for the arch?

We walked up about 45 minutes before closing and they were full (shocking) but got tickets for the next morning at 8:40 piece of cake.

I think a day in advance at the most. Usually you can just walk right up and get tickets. We have been to the top 3 times. Maybe if its a weekend or holiday you might have a problem. I like the Italy Hill, or whatever it is called in St. Louis to eat at.

This may or may not apply to you, but note that the little elevator pods you must ride up and down in are not at all a good choice for those who are claustrophobic. And the viewing point at the top of the Arch is a bit that way as well, if not as bad as the elevator pods.
