St James Hotel in NYC- How bad?

I've read the reviews on trip advisor, but like to hear from the fodorites. We'll only be there 1 night in Sept., only for a few hours to sleep, want to be near Times Square without breaking the bank. I know it's a long way from elegant, but my only requirement is "clean". Thanks!

Was that the motel with the bedbugs a few months ago?

How much is the St. James? If you want to stay near Times Sq., the Milford Plaza (8th/46) is not that bad--no bedbugs. My friend from Montreal stayed here last month--I got to see her room. She paid about $225 a night.

I think St. James is around $180. Of course I know that doesn't get much in NYC, but for 1 night I don't need much, just "clean".

Have you looked at trravelzoo and Kayak to see if they have any specials? Don;t know your date - but they ight have something. And - if it's over a weekend yuo can often get real bargains in the financail district, since it;s deserted then.

We usually stay at Milford Plaza or Hotel Edison (they shot a scene from the Godfather there). Actually I like the Edison better. But both hotels are about the same quality wise. Older hotels and small rooms. Both have been recently renovated.

I think I'm leaning toward the Edison. A great location and I don't need anything fancy for just 1 night.
