St George, Utah

Hi; We are booked into La Quinta in St George for a week in April.

Anyone with experience with this hotel. Has good reviews.

Could use suggestions on restaurants. Thanks

MichelleY Feb 14th, 2013 06:37 PM

We were in St, George for about a week about 4 years ago. We used its as a base for Zion etc. and kicking back. No where we ate was particularly memorable. Sorry. We did tour the Brigham Young house, which was very interesting.

iris1745 Feb 14th, 2013 07:47 PM

Thanks MichelleY; We will do Bryce and Zion. We have seen these parks before, but on a tour.

Now we will take our time and enjoy. Will be looking for some trails to walk.

Will be with our daughter and SIL and there will be some relaxing time.

Understand on restaurants.

We enjoyed a lunch at the Bear Paw Coffee Company on N. Main St. I think your hotel is a little bit out of town, although it is close to the highway and St. George is not very big.

Since you are staying in St. George, you might consider going to Snow Canyon State Park which is about 10 or 15 minutes away. It is lovely, reminding us a bit of the Sedona area. There are nice hiking trails and miles of paved bicycle paths. The volunteers at the small Visitor Center were friendly and helpful, allowing us to borrow a booklet for identifying plants and wildlife on our hike. Near the entrance to the park is a beautiful red rock amphitheater where concerts and plays are held. When we visited we were able to watch students from the performing arts high school next door practice for a show.

Have a great trip!

I was in St George last week but only stayed for one night. We ate at 25 Main (it's the restaurant's address) and liked it.

Thanks Shanti and elnap29; We are visiting our daughter and SIL. Hiking is at the top of the list.

We will visit Byrce and Zion. Have been there before, but on a tour and it was like a fly bye. So we will be looking for trails to hike.

Will stop at Snow Canyon.

We meet the kids in Mesquite for one night. They are in a Pickleball tournament and we will have a chance to see them compete.

Snow Canyon is great.

But it's a long drive every day from St George to Zion and much longer to Bryce. Why not stay in Springdale at least part of the time?

I think that the restaurant at Red Mountain Resort is open to the public. It's excellent. Stayed there for 5 days last May and loved it!

WhereAreWe; Something to consider, but the kids will be in St. George.

DebitNM; Thanks

At a bare minimum I would book a room at Bryce for an overnight. Bryce is best viewed at sunset/sunrise so you'd want to be there overnight anyway. It's 2.5 hours from St. George to Bryce, that is a really long day trip if you go back and forth in one day, and leaves little time for hiking and sightseeing.

You can drive through Zion to reach Bryce but that adds another 30 minutes to the drive.

Just keep your week at La Quinta and take an overnight bag to Bryce.

Zion is an hour from St. George, that's more than I would wish to drive for a week but I guess if you're only going there for a few days it's doable, just not ideal.

iris1745 Feb 15th, 2013 09:52 AM

I checked mapquest for Zion and that easily doable.

But what you suggest on an overnight is worth cosidering.

Leave St George early and get to Byrce by 11am.

Spend the day and evening there and go to Zion on the way back to St George the next morning.

I think that would work well.

Iris - that is what we did. We did overnights at Bryce and also at the GC North Rim. Much more enjoyable that way.

iris1745 Feb 15th, 2013 10:28 AM

MichelleY;Thanks. We won't go as far ar the GC. Been their twice. Stayed in the lodge. Took a bus to Hermits Reach and walked the Rim 8 miles back to the lodge.

Did Bright Angle three miles down. My wife suffered on the way back. I jogged back up BA for about two hundred yards and had people clapping for me. Then I found a spot and thought I was going to 'die'. FUN

Another vote for staying nearer to the National Parks.

However, St. George is pretty close to Kolob Canyons so that would be an easy drive. Go in the afternoon so you can see the wonderful colors from the setting sun.

Hi Shanti; I looked at a Best Western at Byrce and will now wait for the kids to see what they think.

But it is a good idea.

starrs Feb 15th, 2013 06:35 PM

I don't have restaurant recommendations but have a wonderful time. One of my favorite areas. Enjoy!

StantonHyde Feb 15th, 2013 09:04 PM

Isnt the Painted Pony in St George? It is quite good.

iris1745 Feb 16th, 2013 04:33 AM

Stanton; Yes, the PP is in St George and has very good reviews. Thanks

Thanks starrs. Everything is booked. Just waiting for the kids to see if they want an overnight in Byrce.

iris1745 Feb 18th, 2013 09:49 AM

Overnight it is, as I booked the BW Bryce Canyon Grand Hotel getting a AAA discount for two rooms.

That was a very good suggestion.

Where Zion is only an hour out from SG, when we leave Bryce we may go to Cedar Breaks National Monument and then Cedar City.

Zion can be visited on another day.
