St Francisville
 

I am taking my mom to stay at the Myrtles Plantation for Mother's Day. Has anyone been there before? Did you take the haunted tour? What is there to see & do around the town? Also I am driving up from Houston. Any neat places to stop along the way (I10 I guess). Jamcat

It's been years since I went but I loved my road trip through this part of La. I went to St Francisville, St Martinville, Opolousas (sp) Alexandria, Baton Rouge, Houma, etc... just awesome. Beautiful old homes, some in sad state of decay. I bought a Mobil Travel Guide, which is just an awesome resource.

I love St.Francisville. I was there last October and stayed at the Barrow House. I did the haunted tour, it was interesting and they do have a nice restaurant on the grounds. You could stop in Lake Charles and New Orleans enroute from Houston.

We stayed two nights at the Myrtles (different room each night in the main house) and took the haunted tour. We enjoyed our stay. Our only complaint was that the bedrooms were a little run-down and the bathrooms were very small. We had a very nice dinner at the restaurant on the grounds.

We toured through most of the plantations that were open for tours. A few were not open as it was July and VERY hot. Stopped at the Houmas House on the way back to New Orleans.

Southern Living magazine had a real good article on St. F in in the last couple of months. I'm not sure which month but it has been since Christmas. It tells all about what to do in St. F. Good luck.

Was in St. Francisville for the day a few years ago during a port visit. Interesting quaint town with lovely antebellum homes and history. Two places I highly recommend visiting is the musuem and a former bank that's been converted to a sewing needles store I believe. The thing that's so wonderful about the store is that it's very old and all original including the bank vault and old time teller windows. You won't be disappointed. There's also a small but looking B&B but I cannot recall it's name. If you're going during the summer as I did, please know that there's not much shade in the town.

I grew up in Lafayette, La and would have to say that St.Francisville is among my favorite towns to visit. I have done the Myrtles tour many times, but have yet to spend the night. Call me biased, but Lafayette is a great place to stop, especially to eat. Hope you have a good time!

I like Lafayette too and like New Orleans its "French" Louisiana while the Feliciana's (St. Francisville) are more "English" louisiana so the history is a little different, well at least the last names are different :)

Great ideas! A Big thank you to BIGJAY for the referenced Southern Living article. It was excellent. I found it in April 2003. Thinking I might stop for a couple of hours in Lake Charles to introduce gambling to my "Baptist" mom. You mentioned Lafayette for eating. Any suggestions, not too far from the interstate? Jamcat

Drive a little past Lafayette, and stop at Landry's in Breaux Bridge to eat. Great seafood, reasonable prices, and just off I-10.

NO won't be on your way to St. Francisville from Houston, but it's not a horribly long drive.

As far as restaurants are concerned, I'd suggest stopping in Lafayette at Prejeans Restaurant, which is located about 10 miles. Wonderful food, great atmosphere and live cajun music.
