St Charles Trolley to Commander's Palace
 

We will be in NO for two days the end of the month. We have never been to the Garden District before and would like to take the Trolley to visit and have lunch at Commander's Palace. Where do we catch it? and how long should I count on it taking us so that I can make reservations for lunch?

We just did that - you catch it on Carondelet St, just before it meets Canal St.

We rode the St Charles street car several times. There can be issues, delays etc. I would plan on 40 minutes which would include waiting time for street car. I would add a few minutes, personally, and if you are early, you can walk around Lafayette Cemetery.

No real dress code, but a warning: try not to fill up on the fantastic bread while you're waiting for your meal!

We went to several places for dinner and had read that jacket was required for men at these higher end places. DH did; MANY did not.

Good thinking about the bread because you will want to have room for the bread pudding!! It will be a challenge however!!

I am so disappointed! CP is full, cannot take us! I made reservations at Antoines but is there another restaurant that would be a better choice?

If you feel like taking a bit of a trip - take the St Charles street car out a way, to Birch St. Get off and walk back a block to Jeanette St and have lunch at Boucherie. Make a reservation. It will take about an hour's ride and you will have to get off the street car and take a bus part of the way as they are working on the streetcar lines past Napoleon. No extra charge and the buses are waiting for you as you exit the streetcar. Great lunch.

OR

Take the #11 Bus along Magazine St and have lunch at Clancy's on Annunciation St. Great Food.

Thanks Deb, I considered Boucherie but it would take so much time and we only have, not quite, 2days. How's Arnaud's for lunch and maybe CW Fins or Muriels for dinner?

We did Muriels. DH had a great dinner - Bayoubaisse and I had the Drum. Mine was good, his was much better. Have a drink on the Balcony first. Buy it at the bar and then just take it upstairs. If there is a function upstairs, no can do.

You could take the streetcar out to the curve and get off and eat at Camellia's.

If you really want to eat at CP, keep calling to see if they have a cancellation. It's a nice stroll from there past (and into) the lovely cemetery on the way to Magazine Street. I adore the gelato and pastry shop on Magazine, Sucre.

If you can't choose between Antoine's and other options, take the wonderful walking and tasting tour that visits many of them with samples of their most famous foods - and even a visit in Antoine's kitchen. We REALLY enjoyed the tour.

The St. Charles street does not currently go to "the curve"; it stops @ Napoleon. You have to switch to bus...which gets you to Carrollton but isn't as "fun" as streetcar. If the goal is to take streetcar AND have lunch, there are several nice places just past Lee Circle including Emerils which I was told does lunch Thursday and Friday. Several others...including Chopped Champion Matt Murphy's Irish House.

Washington is the stop for Lafayette #1. You can also go to St. Louis #1 ; it isn't a far walk from FQ. There were lots of tourists at both.

I was just in New Orleans three weeks ago and went to Commander's Palace for lunch. We did not have a reservation, but it was not a problem! If you're in the area, it's worth a try to just go in like we did. It was a Tuesday. The bread pudding souffle was wonderful (the 25 cent martinis were fun, too)! We were not even planning to go there, but Coquette was not open for lunch that day. I had on my sneakers! They didn't turn us away, we had great service!

The streetcar went to the curve when we were there. It was a lovely ride. We actually ate lunch at Cooter Brown's, thanks to the recommendation of a Fodorite. They had the best po boys in NOLA - and I've had Louisiana reps take me to a lot of places known for their po boys ;)

Good beer too. It's a dive kind of a place - the polar opposite of CP.
