St Charles Ave Streetcar, New Orleans
I have done various searches on this site re: NOLA and Memphis and they have been invaluable! One of the suggested 'must-do's' is a ride on the St Charles Streetcar. Looking at the map, I can't quite determine where the best places to visit are, within walking distance from the stops. Lafayette Cemetery looks interesting (along with Commanders Palace for Brunch, although there are mixed reports!). Also, is the Anne Rice house walkable and safe from here? Many thanks for your input.

Yes the Anne Rice house is walkable from the streetcar. When you get off, one block is wonderfully looked after house and the next block can be completely run down. I never felt unsafe in the area. There seemed to be a lot of people about on walking tours. There is stretches along the route you will not want to visit (nothing of interest) just hop back on the streetcar and go to the next area. We did that with the Zoo.

We got RTA passes which allowed for unlimited rides on the streetcars and buses. I believe it was a 3 day pass for about $8-10. We bought them at the same place where the riverboat tickets were sold right on the riverfront, but they were availible at many places. I believe that when you pay the fare on board the streetcar, it's only 1 way and when you get back on you have to pay another fare. The passes made it really easy, just hop on or off where ever.
We felt totally safe wandering around the GD. There are walking tours you can take. We took one in the FQ with the Historic New Orleans Walking Tour Co and really enjoyed it. They also do a tour in the GD. In the Frommer's Guide to New Orleans there is a self-guided walking tour for the GD which we found helpful as well as information and a map of what you pass by on the streetcar.

We did Camellia Grille, Commander's Palace, Walking tour of the Garden District including Anne Rice's house (NOT all on the same day). Also the big bookstore near her house where she does all her signings; good selection of books and a cafe for a snack break. We loved seeing all the different areas along the St. Charles route, and the kids thought it was great fun. We would've liked to tour Lafayette cemetary, but just didn't have enough time.

I was in New Orleans once, back in 1992 (when Hurricane Andrew passed close by), and rode the St. Charles streetcar to the Uptown district. I'd definitely recommend it. Had a great breakfast at the Camelia Grille, which SloPugs mentioned, and then walked all the way back to the French Quarter, with some detours into the Garden District. You'll pass a large park (Fairmount?), a university (Tulane?) and also the house which was in the movie "Pretty Baby."
