St Augustine Hotels, what area?
 

Hi-- everyone gave me such great info from my previous post, but I am having a hard time figuring out exactly what area to stay in in St Augustine. I have looked at lots of previous posts, but most of them are old, so I thought I'd try to get some up to date info.
We want to be very close and within walking distance to the sights in the Historic District. Looking at the map, I cant quite figure out where that would be. We'd be happy if we didn't need to drive around too much. If someone who knows the area would give me the name or address of a great hotel/location, I will use that as my guide to find what we need.
We do not want to spend too much, but we know that a weekend in Feb might cost a bit more.Cleanliness & location are our priorities. A nice B&B would be great if the price is right.

Klapenta, we stayed in a cute little B&B that I can't remember the name of but as we were walking around the Historic District we walked past the Best Western Bayfront, it looked very clean and the location was great! It is across the street from the Bay and within a few minutes walk to the Fort. You are very close to everything Historic including restaurants. http://bestwesternbayfrontstaugustine.com/

We love it here, our weekend getaway place. The Best Western is a bit dated but it is ok. There is a comfort Inn close to it also. Stay in the Historic District within walking distance for sure.

The Hilton is nice but very pricey for a Hilton.

I have stayed at what is now apparently Best Western Bayfront, when it was Monterey Inn. It was nice and clean and the location was absolutely the best, with a fabulous view of the water and the fort. You could walk right into the historic district from the hotel property.

The beauty of Old Saint Augustine is that it's so compact, with plenty of restaurants and historic sites to visit, not to mention that it's handsomely situated on the Matanzas Bay. I very much enjoyed my stay at the Penny Farthing Inn, about a 3 minute walk from the Lightner Museum and Flagler College. See if it appeals on Trip Advisor.

Jayne, wow did they ever renovate it. Wish they showed a picture of the bathroom as they were tiny. It was a great location as the Monterey. We use to take bike trips and stay there for safe keeping and loved that second floor balcony.

Hi Daniel! Yes, it was the Penny Farthing Inn that we stayed in and enjoyed it very much but as we walked past the Best Western Bayfront we thought we would not mind staying there, I believe it was cheaper and very close to all things.

Yes, flpab, that balcony was so nice for sitting with a cocktail in the evening and soaking up the vibes. Funny, I don't remember the tiny bathrooms. The place does look quite different on the exterior now, for sure. We enjoyed breakfast at Mary's next door, and walked down the street our first evening to a great place with an outdoor courtyard for dinner.

My general philosophy regarding hotel locations is to start with the oldest properties, because after all, they got the best spots because they were some of first ones there.

Great Info---now I know the general area, but which area is BETTER to stay in--north or south of A1A as it crosses the bay?
The Best western bayfront looks like it will fit our needs and
I really like the some of the B&B's (nicer atmosphere).But I imagine that we will not spend too much time in our room since this is our first trip to St Augustine and we'll be doing allot of exploring. Also,since we will be driving through on our way to FL from CT, we are a little reluctant about 7 day cancellation policies at many of the B&B's. Although we totally understand why they have to do that. So I will research some properties with a 24 hour or possibly a 3 day cancellation policy. Has anyone stayed at the Bayfront Inn?

I looked at the former Monterey Inn now BW Bayfront on Trip advisor and it still has those tiny bathrooms and some of the pictures are iffy. If you can deal with that then the location is perfect. It is so easy to walk anywhere there. Make sure you at least walk into Flager College. Beautiful.

The A1A does some funny twists & turns and crosses the bay twice in the Saint Augustine area, so I'll assume you mean the Bridge of Lions crossing. Anywhere from a few blocks south of the Bridge of Lions A1A crossing to a few blocks north of the Castillo de San Marcos is what I would call "ideal and central for exploration of Saint Augustine by walking". The Best Western Bayfront is ideally situated (I hope you enjoy the waterfront as much as I did; it's really beautiful in my opinion). I didn't drive at all in Saint Augustine, walking everywhere from the Oldest House and the Murat House on the southern end (a few blocks south of Bridge of Lions), all the way up to the kitsch "Ponce de Leon Fountain of Youth Archaeological Park" (about 10 blocks or so north of the Castillo). Only time I needed a vehicle was when I took a trolley out to Saint Augustine Beach one day.

flpab--- I think I was talking about an Inn called "The Bayfront Inn" 138 Avenida Menendez--which I believe is a little south of the Best Western.Looked pretty good on trip Advisor.
Anyway-----all your advice is appreciated.

Ok Guys,Heres where I am----
My decision is between the Best Western Bayfront and the Bayfront Inn.
Price is a little better at Bayfront Inn (free parking & breakfast included) BUT is south of the Bridge of Lions and I'm not sure if we would still be in the ideal location for walking everywhere.
Can you help?

The Bayfront Inn is also ideally situated for exploring Saint Augustine by foot. At the Bayfront Inn, you're closer to the southern attractions such as the Oldest House, Murat House and the Lightner Museum. At the Best Western, you're closer to the northern attractions such as the Castillo, the Colonial Quarter and Mission Nombre de Dios. It probably takes 15-20 minutes walking to get from the southern attractions like the Oldest House to the northern attractions like the Castillo...Saint Augustine is really compact.
