SSM Mackinac Advise

I am planning a Sept. trip to the UP and am looking for advice and suggestions.
Tentative Plan:
1 night SSM. Stay on us or Canadian side? Recommendations?
Ride the Algoma Central train. Spend night in Hearst or Errington lodge? Is there a days worth of activities in Hearst?
Return to SSM next day. Lighthouse or locks boat tour the following morning.

Go to Mackinac Island - stay 2 nights on island. Grand Hotel is it worth it?

Thanks

Regarding the price of The Grand, it depends on who you are and what you will be expecting.

If you are expecting a very quiet, restful, relaxing 2 days with not a lot of exciting options other than the chance to relax, than I think it's worth it. The food is fabulous as well.

My husband and I go at the end of every summer season to enjoy some R&R, but we have had friends that don't like the island, or paying the cost of the Grand because it's not exciting enough for them.

Be sure to watch their website - they run specials at the end of the season for buy 1 get 1 free nights. And paying a little more for a room overlooking the water is definately worth it (to me).

Thanks for the info. Eating well is important. We are not into a lot of excitement. Appreciate the tip on watching for specials and will definitely do that.

If you are taking the Algoma Central than stay on the Canandian side. One of the closest hotels in the Holiday Inn. Nothing really fancy but great views of the St. Mary's River and boats entering/leaving the locks.

I'm not sure about Hearst. Most people just do the day trip to the falls area.

The Grand is lovely but pricey and it does include breakfast and dinner. Sept. It's a great time for this trip since the summer crowds should be gone. Just watch out for organized bus trips, usually senior citizens.

Never been to SSM, but on Mackinac, I would look into some of the other hotels on the island - such as the Mission Point Resort (almost as nice for less money), or the Island House or the Chippewa are less expensive and still have views. The Grand Hotel is very, very nice, but I think it's a little overpriced.

Thanks to all for your input. Will stay on the Canadian side in Soo and am rethinking the end of line trip and just going to the falls. Will look at the other options on Mackinac Island. This is our first trip to Michigan and are looking forward to it.
