sportbars in San Francisco for boxing & football
Message: You guys always come through for me. Anyone know of a sports bar in San Francisco where can watch the big pay-per-view fights coming up Dec. 13th? We're going to be in town & would really like to find some place now. We were in NYC during Gatti v Ward 2 & it was difficult but not impossible to find bars willing to show the fight. (The city is really strict about that sort of thing as we were told.)
Also, where is a great place to watch Sunday football in SF? We prefer sportsbars where you can watch all different games -- not just the local teams -- & possibly where the locals hangout. Where they serve nachos, wings, Bud, etc. This will be our only downtime day while in town. Don't worry, we will be running around seeing the sights the rest of the time we're there. We love ESPN Zone, Fox NFL, Hooters, etc. -- places like those. Anybody have recommendations? Thanks. |
I think that Greens is the best "local" sports bar in SF: http://www.digitalcity.com/sanfranci....adp?vid=32255 Like the Ship of Fools in NYC, it is the place on Saturdays where out-of-state alumni clubs come to watch their teams' college footbal games. There's also a pretty good one in the lobby of the SF jukebox Marriott downtown, but it's more of a hotel/chain bar -- don't know if they cater to helping out-of-towners find their game when away from home. Not sure about boxing, sorry. |
Thanks for the reply, Scurry. I will check out the site. I have been to Ship of Fools in NYC and it was CROWDED but it was on a Saturday Nov. last year. Didn't stay. We found a place at 99 Hudson to watch college ball but we actually watched the fight at Shakespears of all places. Ship of Fools was one of the 12 - 15 bars that said that they could not show the fight because of city restrictions. I believe some said they were not allowed to show anything from HBO, Showtime, etc. or they could be fined.
Anyway, I am sooo looking forward to going to SF. I haven't been since I was a kid and I thought it was wonderful then. Got any "must do's" for us to check out while we're there next week? (12/12 - 12/17) Sports, theater, comedy, sights, festivals, etc.? Thanks |
Perry's on Union Street is a popular place for the big games. I'm not sure about boxing.

I'm going up there tonight so I'll look for events going on in the coming weeks. For big sports fans, I think that the Giants do give tours of SBC Park although I don't know about December -- www.sfgiants.com For music, checkout www.pollstar.com |
How about Pat O'Shea's?
http://www.patosheas.com/ I hate to burst your bubble but unfortunately SF will most likely not be as nice as you remember it when you were a kid. By the way, where will you be staying? My best advice would be to not stay in downtown because the area can be on the seedy side, as well as the homeless problem. Your best bet would be the Cow Hollow and Marina areas. The Embarcadero is also fine. If you have a car you may want to look into the Cow Hollow Motor Inn or the Columbus Motor Inn since they have free parking. Below are some sites that are part of a 5 day series on the problems in SF and neighborhoods that sem to be most affected. http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/articl...NGRA3E0RI1.DTL http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/articl...NG7M3ER411.DTL http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/articl...2/BU133124.DTL |
