I agree with Howard too. I'll probably see it this spring.

HowardR Feb 4th, 2011 12:03 PM

If the critics give it raves, then I MIGHT consider seeing it.

Well, HowardR, after you read Ben Brantley's review (yes, he finally reviewed it, referring to it as "an unending work in progress") I'm sure you won't be seeing it. Do read the article though. It's a pan worthy of Dorothy Parker's finest scathing reviews:

"general and seriously depressing disaster"

"not only the most expensive musical ever to hit Broadway; it may also rank among the worst."

"so grievously broken in every respect that it is beyond repair."

And it gets worse from there:

I just heard Brantley on NPR defending his decision to publish a review while the show is still in previews. He said that a) they long ago exceeded the normal length of a preview period, and in his opinion you don't get to stay in previews for ages and ages, b) they're charging regular prices for previews, which is just not done, and c) it was such a big story nationwide that he felt he owed it to his readers to write a review. He also said that while the producers can claim it's still a work in progress, there is so much wrong with it that they could never fix it all.

Apparently Brantley wasn't the only critic who decided to review it; there are reviews in Slate, the LA Times, and the Washington Post as well. The Post's headline reads: "No Superpowers Needed to Sniff Out This Stinker." Ouch!

321go, I'm way ahead of you. I read the review early this morning and started a new thread about it before 8 a.m.!

Aw, Howard, I should have known you'd be on it! ;-)

Well, I think I may be going to see this "doomed" show.

18 months later it's still running and is doing fairly well with its numbers.

I'll be in NYC a week from now and there's only one other show on sale at TKTS today that I would want to see. It will be kind of fun to see the "after" of the doomed, unfixable show.

Dukey1 Aug 10th, 2013 11:25 AM

IMO it is worth seeing..we saw it when it was in previews and they have fixed a lot of that stuff. It is THEATRE after all. Enjoy it; there are worse things you could be seeing or doing.

I agree. I like "big" shows. I think I'll like it.
