Spending Time in San Francisco's China Town
I was wondering if spending some time walking the streets of San Francisco's China Town is a must when in the city? If so, what are some must see places and stops (maybe restaurants) while there? I'm finalizing my plans for an upcoming trip and want to maximize time on the ground during the 3 days that I'm in town.

A walking tour with City Guides will introduce you to the history and contemporary life of San Francisco's Chinatown. No reservation needed; just show up at the designated time and place.

Sometimes Chinatown is the only place I go in the City. I like the fringes, like the produce markets on Stockton St. south of Broadway. Get off Grant Ave. uphill & down & the lanes off the side streets, to see the more interesting nooks & crannies.

I say yes. If memory serves, Grant Ave. is more touristy knick-knack oriented but still well worth seeing, while Stockton St. is more for locals shopping while also excellent. There are small alleys to explore as well. Plus there are lots of eateries here.

I enjoyed it. The stores sell some interesting food items. Consider having dim sum for lunch.

The City Guides tour is really good.

I think it's worth doing a tour of some kind if you are interested in knowing more. As an outside/tourist just walking around it was OK but not really a "must do" for me.

We did the Wok Wiz tour which was a walking tour of Chinatown with a dim sum lunch. It was very good! We had a wonderful older woman named Dorothy. This was several years ago and she was quite old then so I doubt she is still there, but she told some great history, which she lived through herself. Highly recommend!

Another vote for Ciry Guides - we did the Chinatown Family Associations Tongs and Gangs tour. It was great!
We have had several wonderful dim sum lunches at City View restaurant. |
