Speed trip to Folly Beach
Haven't driven straight to Folly in a while. Coming down 26, what is the fastest time-wise route to Folly at around 10am on Fri am. Thanks!
Are there any public showers anywhere on Folly? we will need to clean up for dinner before the trip back to Greenville. (yes, I'm doing a one day beach trip!) Does Hanks seem like a good place to take a couple of food-disadvantaged teenaged midwesterners? Thought it more kid-friendly than my fave, McCrady's. Thanks |
chick - i can't answer any of your questions, but we did spend a couple of days on Folly Beach last summer and absolutely loved the place! i'm posting this to send it back up to the top...

OK, this will top this and maybe someone will have an answer for you.
Meanwhile, where is Folly? I am guessing SC? Who is Hank and what about McCrady? Will Litespeed ever get to take a public shower adn will they clean up nice for dinner~ :D |
Scarlett - you are such a hoot! i check each day's posts just to see what you are up to next!
Folly Beach is on Folly Island - if i remember correctly, it is @ 12-15 mi. southeast of Charleston, SC - you're right! and yes, i do remember some VERY public showers on the deck between Charleston on the Beach (Hotel)and the fishing pier... but not sure that is what chick is looking for - |
I can not answer you about the public showers, but Hank's, although more casual than most seafood restaurants in Charleston, still requires slacks, skirts, you might possibly be able to get away with nice shorts and a nice top. What about Shucks, Hymans or Bubba Gumps. The only reason I suggest those is you can pretty much where anything (as long as you are clothed - LOL) at those and since you asked about public showers, I am guessing you want to go pretty casual. All of those welcome children and serve pretty good food. Hymans is always voted #1 or something like that. Have fun!

We normally go on a Saturday so I don't know how this will work for a Friday but we take 26 to exit 221A - Bear right on Spring St. and then left on Lockwood. Take the SC30 ramp to Folly and turn left on Folly Road. This averages a 3 hour drive from Charlotte, NC.
Once in Folly Beach continue straight for as long as you can. I think it's Ocean Ave. but if I'm wrong if you keep going straight on Folly Rd. you'll eventually come to the pink Holiday Inn with ocean in front of it. Turn right here. Towards the end of this road is parking areas - there are 2 and both charge $5. The second one you come to has 3 outdoor showers and restrooms. We always shower off and then change in the bathroom if we're there for just the day. Hope this helps! Have fun! Love Folly! |
I miss my one day beach trips when I was living in Atlanta... Yes, we would drive from Atlanta to folly beach and Back in a day. Those were some good times. Yes, there are public bathrooms and showers. They weren't clean... but I guess they were usuable.

Thanks for all the replys. In the end, I took the kids to IOP, even though I prefer Folly, I thought they would like the crowds/volleyball/stores on IOP better. Tragic accident w/ fatality closed I-26 just above Goose Creek, and made for a LONG drive down.
Yes, Scarlett, Litespeed did get a cold, soap-less, very public shower, and I must say my hair looked fantastic what with the beach-induced spiral curls and sunstreaks! Face the color of a lobster pretty-much ruined the effect, though! The teenagers loved Hanks, I don't think I'll be back any time soon. Although service and ambiance is great, the food is mediocre. xp: my God, I can't believe you did a one day from Atlanta. I think this will be my last one-day. Thanks again, all. |
