Special summer treats.....

Whether it's something you've eaten while traveling (to the beach for seafood or the mountains for trout, for example), or something you're enjoying at home, what special food are you enjoying this summer that you don't get to enjoy the rest of the year?

For me, it's the fresh tomatoes from the garden, made into drippy, bursting-with-flavor tomato sandwiches, using white "Kleenex" bread, of course, slathered with JPG or Kraft's mayo. It DOES NOT get any better than that, IMO!:-d

Soft shell crabs :)
Sauteed fried or in spaghetti sauce.
Now that I am in Florida, much of the produce that I waited for in the NE is available all the time. Since I am a big salad and veggie eater, that is a Good Thing~

Here's another vote for fresh tomatotes from the garden.

What is JPG?

I was wondering the same thing about the JPG comment, SandyBrit.

A Google search states, "JPG vs GIF. ... JPG is a 'lossy' compression, resulting in data loss. Make sure you have your original somewhere and just make a copy to compress. ... "

I still don't get it.

Sorry....... I meant JFG! It's a brand of mayo made by JFG Coffee Co. in Tennessee. Has a little more tart, vinegary taste than some..... which I love!

I loved the tiny miniature grapes we bought at the Market in Seattle. Reminded me of the delicious muscadine grapes I used to get in late summer and fall in Louisiana.

Also, some of the Mickey-D's are selling Dippin' Dots right now! :)

Texas peaches - HEAVENLY!!!!

Sliced peaches in my breakfast cereal, peaches with a spinach salad - peach chutney with some grilled pork tenderloin.

Thanks for the explaination bonniebroad. Gee... and I was just in TN - would have tried it had I know about it. ...Next year!

SandyBrit Jul 18th, 2004 09:04 AM

Thanks for explaining that JFG is a brand of mayo - because I didn't know that either.

Best wishes.

Last night's dinner: grilled rib eyes, sweet white corn on the cob, sliced different tomatoes with fresh mozzarella, basil from the garden and very aged balsamic vinegar. Cold watermelon for dessert. Oh..and a bottle of Rosenblum Zinfandel.

Bonnie, a grilled cheese with those tomatoes is awfully good, too! BLT's always hit the spot in summertime if I have fresh tomatoes.

Judyrem Jul 18th, 2004 10:52 AM

..When I was a kid and would visit my grandparents in Gulfport, Mississippi in the summer, I would live for going to these small sno-cone shacks here and there...the really soft shaved ice and a ton of flavor choices...I liked watermelon flavor syrup the best....Never had one quite as good since...

MelissaHI Jul 18th, 2004 11:17 AM

mmm, Wednesday, I was JUST thinking about the shave ice we eat in Haleiwa on the North Shore of Oahu! Many tourists stand in a long line at Matsumoto's, but we locals go to Aoki's or Miura's just down the road.

But if you visit Oahu, you don't have to drive all the way out to the North Shore for shave ice. When I'm done running around Kapiolani Park and Diamond Head, I like to head over to Waiola Store on Kapahulu Avenue. Their shave ice hits the spot after a long run on a hot Hawaii day!

picture this....An August summer evening just got out of the shower allowing the warm summer breeze to air dry your hair eating a " creamsickle " on your front porch. remember those?

bonniebroad Jul 18th, 2004 12:23 PM

Yes, of course, the orange and vanilla ice cream bar! (sigh)........... memories!

dwoodliff Jul 18th, 2004 12:25 PM

We called them "Dreamsicles", and you could only get them from the ice-cream man.

Donna

bonniebroad Jul 18th, 2004 12:26 PM

I'm sure that here in Carolina, we called them "Creamsicles"........

Scarlett Jul 18th, 2004 12:33 PM

My husband called them Creamsicles in NYC .. I never cared for them but did love those Nutty Buddy (sp?) cones :)

Jocelyn_P Jul 18th, 2004 01:31 PM

Scarlett,
What would an alternate spelling be? Nutty Butty? No thanks. :D
