Special food from special places for gifts...

Thinking about Christmas and I want to give our friends something different and special this year. One year I gave them Marshall Fields mints for gifts. Another year a local candy store boxed chocolates.

I am looking for something new, but special, under $50 to ship to friends, such as fruitcake, nuts, Smithfield ham, NYC bagels, smoked salmon? I don't know, just something my friends couldn't get, or wouldn't think to get for themselves...any ideas?

I like to send people peanuts from the Peanut Shop in Colonial Williamsburg, VA - the chocolate covered ones are huge and covered with good quality chocolate - the best I've ever had.

By the way, we love to receive Frango Mints. Whenever there is a box under the Christmas tree of a certain size, the kids sniff it, hoping it's Frango Mints!

One more thing: When we were in Quebec, we got a tub of maple butter. Delicious! I just googled "maple butter" and got lots of different sites. It is SO good!

I give Moravian cookies from Mrs. Hanes cookie shop near Winston-Salem, NC. They come in delicious flavors,my favorite is black walnut, pack for shipping very well, and there is a wide range of prices. http://www.hanescookies.com

Key Lime Pie from Key West. That would be such a nice treat during the winter.

Grade A Maple Syrup is nice. I like to send Wild Rice (I live in Minnesota). I also like receiving Indian River citrus (oranges or grapefruit); they're particularly nice in cold winter places.

How about something unique that will also help others in need? One site I know of is http://www.seva.org/ but I'm sure there are plenty more.

Personally, because I am very selective about what I eat, I don't care for food gifts. Maybe your friends are like me??

Pralines from one of the candy shops in Savannah. I send them as "thank you gifts" as everyone has raved about them.

My uncle gave us pecan assortments with different flavorings/ coatings. It was a FABULOUS gift. One of my favorites ever. Great for personal consumption or an instant appetizer solution for pre-holiday parties.

I can give websites if you are interested in either.

Just don't send a fruitcake, lol. We had a relative that use to send us one every Christmas holiday, sigh. Fortunatly we had an inlaw that loved fruit cakes so we always passed the annual fruitcake onto her.

I'd rather get oranges or grapefruits than fruitcake!

I second the pralines from Savannah. Savannah Candy Kitchen, I think the place is called.

H&H bagels in NY will ship worldwide.

One year we received a fruit of the month type thing and LOVED it. Each month we'd get a box of a different fruit. Big juicy oranges from Florida one month, strawberries from Louisiana another, etc.

Except maybe the cornmeal fruitcakes.

A gift we loved getting and now send to others is a Danish Kringle. Here's the website for the bakery we use.

In our area (Saratoga, NY) there is a Christmas tradition- called a "Peppermint Pig". One company http://www.saratogasweets.com/

makes them, and many families have a tradition about eating them.

They taste like candy canes- but its a fun little gift!
