Spam Museum

Has anyone been to the Spam museum in Austin, Minnesota? Was it interesting?

I WORK at the Spam Museum. Well, actually I work for Hormel Foods and our department is located in the same building as the Spam Museum. I think you'll find the museum a qwirky little place that is easy to enjoy. You can even "can your own Spam!" The gift shop has got some unbelievable things! We'd love to have you stop!

You should open a branch in Honolulu. Those locals love that stuff!

Paul Jun 26th, 2002 07:17 AM

Sounds interesting. How many kinds of Spam are there? I know in Hawaii, many restaurants serve it...

Where is Austin MN? How far from Minn?

Paul Jun 26th, 2002 10:29 AM

Its about 100 miles south of Minneapolis.

There are at least two kinds of Spam: Original, and Low-Fat. When I heard of the latter product's introduction, I fell on the floor laughing.

I think there is a tabasco spicy one too.

In addition to Original and Spam Lite, there's turkey Spam, "Less Sodium" and "Smoke Flavored." Yum!

Question Jun 26th, 2002 12:01 PM

What is Spam? (A serious question. I've heard of it but never knew what it was. One of those things that just passed me by somehow...)

oink Jun 26th, 2002 12:08 PM

Spam is what happens to all that's left of a pig when the butcher gets done cutting away the recognizable parts.

Suzy Jun 26th, 2002 12:25 PM

The spam.com web site is a hoot. And tells you what's in Spam.

Paul Jun 26th, 2002 01:00 PM

I think its lips, ears, tails, snouts and other leftovers. BTW, I like it.

Elizabeth Jun 26th, 2002 06:27 PM

Spam is a canned processed ham product.

It comes in a rectangular tin opened with a key, or used to. I think it was invented as a non-perishable food for WW II soldiers, though I suppose the website tells this better & more accurately.

In the 40s and 50s it was a common kids' lunch sandwich food. If people eat it now, they don't live where I do (in New York). Though of course it is still relatively inexpensive and convenient, as it is meat and doesn't need refrigeration.

Little known fact about Austin, Mn. John Madden was born there(yes, that John Madden).

Dick

Me too.

Sorry to get off-topic, but I just checked out the recommended spam website. I can't decide which would make a better gift - the boxers with little glow-in-the-dark spam cans all over or the spam-snowglobe! This is a great website.

Suzy Jun 30th, 2002 03:39 PM

I think the best part of the web site is the FAQ. Great attitude!
