Space Shuttle viewing

Is it worth the drive from Tampa to go to Cocoa Beach and try to see the shuttle take off? We arrive in Tampa the afternoon/evening of the 4th of October, and the shuttle is due to take off on the 5th at 9:30 am. We would have to leave early morning of the 5th to try and get there in time. We are travelling with our two children, 5 and 8. Would this be something the family would enjoy?

Yes it is definitely worth it if you and your children like aviation at all, but I've heard from my husband who works on the shuttle that the launch date might be pushed back...you might want to check.

forgot to say that it is a night launch and it should be spectacular.

I am a HUGE space buff so I am a bit biased, but if you have the opportunity to see a space shuttle launch, go for it! The power generated by the shuttle is awesome. It's an experience you definitely will not forget.

seeing a rocket launch is a great experience. keep in mind that 1. launches rarely go on schedule and 2. the crowds can be pretty heavy. use the weather channel....if theres even the slightest chance of bad weather i wouldn't bother to go. night launches are incredible!!

It's an amazing sight if you luck out and it goes on schedule. Along the river in Cocoa is the best place for viewing. Get there early for a parking space.

Definitely, worth it. And I agree with the above poster, get their early if possible because of the crowds and traffic. You can check NASA's website or call their 800 # for launch information.
