Southfield Michigan restaurants..
 

Will be staying at the Detroit Southfield Marriott. Any good restauarants nearby?

Emily, I live on the eastside of Detroit but am on that side of town often for business. If you will define "good" and "nearby" for us, I would be happy to give you my favorites. How much do you want to spend and how far would you go, i.e. walking distance, will you have a car, etc.

I live in Southfield, Emily. What type of restaurant are you looking for?

Here are some of my favorites...
Merriweather's (A Chuck Muir Restaurant)
seafood, steaks, great 'Martha's Vinyard' salad
Sweet Lorraine's - 'L.A. cuisine' plus burgers, fish, vegetarian, pasta, sandwiches.
Tom's Oyster Bar - full restaurant
Copper Mug Brewery - A bit pricey for a brewery - but good food non-the-less
Volcano Grill - Young hip atmosphere
Morton's of Chicago - Complete with cigar room

I live in the Royal Oak area and I can strongly recommend the Beverly Hills Grill. It is on Southfield Rd. just north of 13 mile. Wonderful food. It's about 4 or 5 miles from the Southfield Marriott.

Also, downtown Royal Oak is only a few miles from your hotel as well. Lots of restaurants and bars there. My favorite sushi place is there (Little Tree). There's also a Mongolian BBQ, Toms Oyster Bar, an Italian Place (can't remember the name) and lots of other places.

There's also a bunch of places in Ferndale with good food. Ferndale is just south of Royal Oak, and probably about the same distance from your hotel.

My favorite Detroit area restaurant is close by (by motor city standards). Il Posto, a rather elegant Italian restaurant. The food here is the best I've had at any Italian restaurant including NYC, Chicago, and Venice. It is a lovely place with an Italian staff and a Maitre'd that is one in a million.

They make their own Limoncello and it is ambrosial...also their own air dried beef which served with figs is an ambrosial appetizer.

Il Posto is indeed a fantastic restaurant!! Delcious and worth every penny!

I am showing my ignorance here - but I did not know what Limoncello was, so I had to look it up. Here's the recipe in case anyone lives as sheltered a life as I do. And btw - I MUST try II Posto soon!

From Rachael Ray, Food TV:

1 pint lemon sorbet
1 pint vanilla ice cream
4 jiggers limoncello, Italian lemon liqueur available at any large liqueur store, any lemon liqueur may be substituted
1 lemon, zested
Wafer cookies, for garnish

Place 1 scoop of lemon sorbet along side 1 scoop of vanilla ice cream in each dessert cup. Top each serving with 1 jigger of the lemon liqueur. Grate the zest of 1 lemon on each bowl of sorbet and ice cream. Garnish cups with wafer cookies sticking out of the ice cream, then serve.

Hi Paul: Limoncello is usually served as an after dinner digestif. Usually comes ice cold in those tall vodka shot glasses. Most limoncello is harsh but the Il Posto one is excellent. Many old Italian restaurants make their own. The first I had was a million years ago at the old Mafia restaurant in the Detroit Eastern Market. Can't remember the name but I do remember the booze. ^)^ LMF

Would that be Roma's Cafe? Spent many a New Year's Eve there - for a late afternoon lunch.

Roma Cafe....that's it. All those dark suits wandering up the stairs to the private dining room with the limos on the side.

Great minestrone soup...wonderful on a cold snowy evening. LMF

Haven't been there in a couple of years, but the restaurant in the hotel is good. I stayed there working for a client for a month and got hooked on the lobster bisque.
