We took a trip to Vermont last year and stayed at the West Mountain Inn in Arlington, which is near Bennington. We found the food there to be outstanding. They have a website, which is www.westmountaininn.com. Very nice place. We travelled south and stopped in Cooperstown, NY - what a neat little town. The Baseball Hall of Fame was fascinating and there are several good restaurants in town. I'm not sure if this is on your way but it was a nice stop on the way home for us.

Brattleboro, Vermont, is a funky little city; parts of it are a throwback to the sixties. There are two very good restaurants, both on the same street (Elliot): Peter Havens and T.J. Buckley's. You'll need reservations. Also, there is the most incredible fabric (and old buttons) store right on Main Street called Delectable Mountain.

Have not been to Bennington Vermont for years but if it's still there, don't miss the Blue Benn diner...also I believe there's an art museum in Bennington that features a lot of American folk art--very cool place. Also the Bennington pottery. And ther are some gorgeous churches (and adjoining cemetaries) that are fascinating to explore.

Call 1-800-VERMONT. Ask for literature for that area. As I recall, there is a brochure with a map of that Route and all the sights, shopping and dining along the way.

We and our boys loved Top Notch at Stowe!

If you like historic houses, check out Hildene in Manchester VT. About 20 min North of Bennington, up route 9 I believe. Todd Lincoln, son of Abraham Lincoln, lived there. Very nice. Manchester is very quaint. |
