Southern road trip ideas/reccomendations
Hi all!
My bf and I are planning to take an 11 day road trip in September. We were planning to start in Nashville (will be flying from MA) and head to NOLA then Savannah, on to Charleston and then Asheville and trek back to Nashville to fly home. Does this trip seem ridiculous? I know it would be trying to cram in a ton of stuff in a short amount of time. Any suggestions would be very appreciated. Thanks! |
Seriously consider flying to NO, then Jacksonville, FL, where you could rent a car for Savannah-Beaufort-Charleston-Greenville-Asheville-Smoky Mountains--Nashville.
You could do this in 11 days if the only thing you saw in Nashville was the rental car return at the airport. If you make Beaufort, Greenville (downtown)and the Smokies drive throughs or lunch stops, you might be able to spend 1.5 days in each larger town, not enough, but it will let you know if you want to come back. September is hurricane season in New Orleans, so you might want to save it for a winter trip and start in Jacksonville. Why JAX? Big airport, more flights from MA than Savannah. |
September is hurricane season in that whole past of the country, so all of the coastal areas could be affected. But I wouldn't let that stop you.

Thanks for your responses! I think we will pass on NOLA.As much as we want to go, it seems to save it for another trip.

If you pass on NOLA check flying into Charlotte and making your loop from here. It is 3.5 hours to Charleston, then on up to Nashville back to Asheville and 2 hours to Charlotte. You could pass through the Smokies on that loop

We already booked our flights to Nashville so that would be our starting point but we definitely want to check out the Smokies.

Aiden--Confining your trip to Tennessee and North Carolina, and possibly southwestern Virginia is a good idea and will make it more enjoyable than trying to cover a large part of the southeast in a short period of time.
I'd do what Gretchen has advocated, but in reverse and leaving out Charlotte: Nashville through the Smokies on US441 to the Blue Ridge Parkway to Asheville and then back to Nashville via I-40. You could also see Chattanooga and Memphis, Tennessee, if you get bored in eastern Tennessee/western North Carolina. |
Add in Charleston please as you originally wanted
