Southern California / Need Itinerary Help
Hi, I'm planning a trip to southern California at the end of March with my son (14). We will probably fly into Orange county and make our way to Palm Springs by the end of the week and fly home from there. We will have a rental car. He wants to skateboard and surf. We will probably do that for a few hours each day and then look for other things to do. We don't want to visit any amusement parks this trip. I want to visit Joshua Tree National Park, but other than that, I'm not sure what to do or how much time to allow as we hop from place to place. I'm looking for suggestions of interesting places and nice hotels, around $300 per night. Thanks for any advice you can give!

ymn are you looking for skate parks or for him to just "skate" where he wants?
My son just got a job at Enties skate park in Lake Forest. I can also ask him about cook skate places in O.C. I am sure he knows...
Would you like to stay on the beach in OC?

Sea View Inn on Manhattan Beach would be worth looking into. It's right across from the beach and pier, and further down the beach is a nice strand popular with skateboarders. Manhattan Beach used to be totally open to skateboarders but in the past year or so they've had to put up some rules around town as it was getting out of control.

I think that Huntington Beach would work for your beach stay. There is a Hilton and a Hyatt right across from the beach. He can skate on the bike path and surf at the beach. I'm not sure how good a surfer he is, but HB might be a challenge. He will also need a full wetsuit, because the water is still very chilly in March.
The Block at Orange mall also has a Van's skate park.

Thanks for the replies. I will look into the recommendations.
Dawnnoelm, He will probably just be skating at the parks. Hotel doesn't need to be on the beach. A safe, convenient location for getting around is fine. Let me know what your son has to say about the skating spots. My son likes parks with street courses, ramps and rails, etc. He's not that crazy about bowls or vert. We have been to the Vans park. He wants to try something different this time. Thanks!
