southern California coastal beauty

If you had a day in early March to spend in San Diego and wanted to go somewhere to experience scenic beauty unique to this southern California coastal area, where would you go? Point Loma? Torrey Pines Reserve? Could you recommend a place where whales might be seen?

Your best bet (especially for whale watching) would be Cabrillo National Monument in Point Loma - a large park with an old lighthouse, trails & great views of the city, bay & coastline.

Pt. Loma is nice, but my favorite is La Jolla...the La Jolla Cove area especially.

crazy4Hawaii - Go to www.sandiego.org official tourist site for much good information on San Diego.

Cabrillo National Monument or special whale watching cruises available from 619 557-5450 or 236-1212. Visited Cabrillo National Monument in November and it is impressive. Probably best area to see whales.

Our most recent stay was with The Inn at Sunset Cliffs and their are some very nice walks along the cliffs in this area. The viewing area from this little inn is awesome. This area is not near as touristy IMO - lots of locals walking and running.

La Jolla Cove is spectacular and always worth a visit. Seals here.

If you do see whales migrating would you be kind enough to report back. I am interested in this activity and would love to hear from someone who has actually done it.

Thanks.

Sandy

You can definitely see whales from Cabrillo National Monument. I've seen them from there. There is a glassed-in area, with a roof, with telescopes for viewing. Today would not be a good time to go, it's raining so hard you probably wouldn't see anything at all.

Thanks, everyone! Is La Jolla Cove much of a drive from the Mission Bay area? (We're staying at Paradise Point Resort.)

crazy4hawaii,

La Jolla Cove is probably a 15 min. drive up the coast from where you'll be staying. San Diego isn't that spread out (as compared to L.A. e.g.) and is easy to navigate.

A small clarification, the seals are not in La Jolla Cove. They are at the Children's Pool along the coast to the south from the Cove.

Barbara - You are correct about the seals being at the Children's Pool, south from the Cove. Thank you for being so gracious with the correction.

Wow, raining hard in San Diego. How cold is it?

Regards.
