South Seas, Cloister, Breakers or Where?

We are hoping to take a trip to Florida or the Georgia coast in May or June. We have a 4 yr. old and 1 1/2 yr. old. After searching the net and previous posts, we have identified South Seas Plantation in Captiva, FL, The Cloister in GA and the Breakers as possibilities. We are looking for a high quality resort with a variety of amenities, but still family friendly (not too formal). All of the above seem to fit the bill, any input (also considering the challenges of travelling with little kids to these locations, i.e. airport friendliness/rental car access etc.) would be appreciated. We will have about a 2-3 hour flight to any of the destinations.

Any thoughts about these places or others would be appreciated.

Here is the story.

The Cloister is supposed to be nice, old money and very expensive. Southern hospitality. Out of the way.

Breakers. Please check the age of their typical guests and then compare it to your own.

South Seas. Went there for my honeymoon. Took the "Learn to Sail" course. Golf course only has nine holes. Spread out-no central location. Oh yeah, I got divorced a couple year later. Draw your own conclusions.

Are you kidding? No question the Breakers! What a magnificant place!

Just how OLD are those people shuffling around the Breakers?

Sue Nov 25th, 2002 11:41 AM

Not old at all when I was there in March. Average age was mid 30's and a lot of families. When was the last time you were there?

We took our children to the Breakers years ago in the middle of summer and it was practically empty. I'd urge you to stay as far away from there as possible if you plan on going in the off season. There were no children there at all and only a handful of adults. We drove down Worth Avenue (stores weren't open either) and one of the pools at the Breakers was closed.

Summer is off season for South Florida and that is why the Breakers was empty. May is considered shoulder season. Peak season is Thanksgiving through April.
