Any suggestions for specific things to do in this area in early June? Points of interest for a family with a teenage boy. Restaurant ideas, stuff to avoid?<BR><BR>Thanks

Are you kidding? South Park as in Fairplay? Nothing there at all. If you fish maybe...there is a dude ranch although cannot think of the name for hourseback rding other than that its just scenery. Pretty but no "attractions"

Care to give us a city/state? "South Park" could be anywhere.

Thom:<BR>Don't know how you heard about South Park, unless it was from that stupid television show, but Kima is absolutely right. There is nothing in Fairplay, except a bunch of antisocial and anti government nuts. The hotels are dumps, the couple of restaurants are crap, the wind blows all the damn time, the Colorado State Patrol uses Highway 285 as one long speed trap. Need I go on?<BR><BR>Send away for a Colorado tourist guide. There must be a couple of dozen places in Colorado that are a 1000 times better than any part of South Park. E-mail me I can offer plenty of other suggetions depending on your likes and dislikes.

South Park district in the downtown LA area? Home of the Staples Center which would offer plenty of sports games that your son could attend.

South Park in San Francisco? Near PacBell Park? A number of great restaurants ....

The South Park that Kima and Jim are referring to is in Colorado, not far from Breckinridge. I'd guess this is the South Park that Thom is referring to, as it is the South Park in the cartoon show. He's going to have to help us out, if it's not.

Pops In The Park concerts every Sunday night in June.

This would have to be South Park Colorado as it pops up under the Colorado Board. There isn't a whole lot to do in South Park. It's a small town in a great big valley. In fact the only place that comes to mind is their convenience/gas store there.

South Park, Colorado - of course the fame comes from the show, but there is a lot to do in the south park region. Fishing, hiking, shopping in Breckenridge, good restaurant at the Fairplay hotel. Lots of places to stay in cabins, etc. I think you will like it. Call the Fairplay chamber of commerce for other activities.

Who are you kidding? You must be the owner of the Fairplay Hotel!! The restaurant in the Fairplay Hotel is totally crap!. Overpriced, rude servers, drunks in the adjacent bar next door, all day long! Only place I ever ate where the gravy on my chicken fried steak was nearly transparent. Looked like the last paper mache I made for my kid. Don't even think about staying in one of their so-called "Historic" rooms (Read DUMP). You're right about Breck, but get out of Fairplay! And you better not speed one damn bit while driving thru Alma. My work takes me into Fairplay several times a month, so I know where from I speak.

Jim - you obviously don't understand or appreciate "rustic" Colorado. I am sure you are originally from California. And no - I am not from Fairplay (or California). Speeding thru Alma is a no-no - but you gotta love the fake policeperson sitting in the cruiser....

Well - I have visited Colorado on several occasions and have actually returned twice to FAIRPLAY to spend time at the Southpark City Museum.....so please ...give this little place a break! This museum is a fablulous collection of houses and buildings from the old west which were transplanted there to imitate an old western town. The place is fascinating! Each building is filled with authentic antiques from the time period. I agree - there is nothing much else there....but what else would you expect in the middle of the prairie. Coming from the East - I also appreciate the most gorgeous views of the prairie and mountains and a herd of antelope running across the road. This is exciting stuff for us "city slickers". I recommend Fairplay for a 3 hours stop.

What exactly is your son expecting to see at South Park? South Park isn't a town. It is a geological site where a glacier once settled and melted leaving a large grassy flat area called a "park". We travel through "south park" frequently on the way to Gunnison. The most interesting thing in the park is a rock that is name cow rock because it is in the field near road. It is about the size of a cow and painted to look like cow. I don't too many teenage boys would find that too interesting. What you might look into is to see if there are any outfitters near Buena Vista or Fairply and take a horse back ride. There are public hotsprings at Mt Princeton and near Cottonwood Pass. There is great rafting along the Arkansas. This year the only time it will be good is in June.

Hey South Park Fan As a matter fact I was born in Pueblo, lived for nearly 20 years in Denver, and now reside in Canon City. My work takes me to Fairplay at least twice a month, so I guess I can speak from some authority. You must be suffering from oxygen starvation. LOL

So Jim help me out - If you were born in Pueblo, and lived in Denver for 20 years - how is that you can be so hostile towards South Park / Fairplay? Of course we both have to admit that now may not be the best time to visit this area.

Maybe Fairplay and South Park aren't areas you go if you're looking for attractions or glitz, but its got a lot to offer the outdoor-types, you just have to get off 285 and onto the back roads. Also, as one person mentioned, the museum in Fairplay is really interesting. In general, it's a nice change of pace from the development over the pass in Summit County (though even South Park is growing every year).
