South of Yosemite sights

Staying at the Tenaya Lodge in a few weeks after driving from San Francisco. We plan to stay close to that area for the rest of that afternoon. I know that the Mariposa Grove is close by. What else can we see without much driving?

Thanks in advance for your suggestions. You've be a great help in fine tuning our trip!

Wawona is pretty close to the south entrance. Wawona is the home to the historic Wawona Hotel, dating from the late nineteenth century. The Pioneer Yosemite History Center, a collection of historic buildings, is located just over the covered bridge from the hotel. The Pioneer village is interesting as you can see how life was for the people who settled there.

You can head right down the street -- walk it even -- to the narrow gauge railroad trains, which is a pretty enjoyable ride through the forest. Also, you might want to take a drive to Bass Lake.

The website for the railroad mentioned by the previous poster is www.ymsprr.com. It's called Yosemite Sugar Pines railroad.
