South Maui lodging

Hello,

My family and I will be traveling to Maui in March of 2005. I am looking at the VRBO website and would like to know the best area to rent a condo. We would like a condo on the beach, but not to crowded. I was looking at Maalaea Bay or by the Kihei area. We would like to be by some activity, but not if that is attracting alot of crowds. I also would like to know the best luau on the island to attend. Thanks

South Kihei and Wailea are best in South Maui. Best beaches, cleanest water. Can be crowded, but not suffocatingly so in March. North Kihei beaches are poor quality. Nothing much around Maalaea except wind and aroma from sugar processors. Most folks believe Old Lahaina Luau is the best traditional luau and Feast at Lele the best dining experience. Run by same crowd in same town. Pricey but worthy. Book early. Very early, as best seats go to earliest to reserve. Six months ahead is not uncommon for OLL.

We looked into a B&B at Maalaea Bay, and it looked so charming ... but then we heard about the wind in that area, that it can be pretty fierce and not fun, so we never tried it. I would go for South Kihei, hear the Wailea-Kihei line, maybe the Mana Kai Maui. That is a great spot.

We recently stayed at the Maui Kamaole condos in South Kihei and would recommend it. Across the street from beach but not much of a walk. Seemed a step up from the condos we saw in Kihei.

We really like Maui Hill in Kihei. It's
almost in Wailea, across the street from the beach, but really convenient to everything. Do a search for Maui Hill on this site.
