South Haven, Michigan advice needed
 

Spending a few days in South Haven, MI mid July. Looking to enjoy the beaches and possibly rent a boat for a day. Party includes DH, me, and two twenty somethings.

Is alcohol allowed on North Beach (or any beach within 20 miles)?

What are your favorite beaches in the area? Oval Beach gets good reviews.

Any recommendations for boat rentals? Who to rent from?

Favorite eating spots? Not looking to spend more than $15 per person for an entree. Would prefer casual atmosphere where locals would dine.

Any other suggestions appreciated. Thanks!

Dunno about boats.

The state and county parks don't permit alcohol.

Oval Beach in Douglas is a community park, I think. $6 car entrance/day. Nice beach.

The 20-something guys and gals go to North Beach, or Holland State Park.

Clementine's is the big name in SH. But across the street to the west of it, and south a half block is a hidden Italian resto. There are others more visible on the main street, plus another (name?), more upscale, on the other side of the channel from Clem's

By the way, don't rule out Saugatuck/Douglas, 15 minutes north on US-31, with far more restaurants.

$15? I thought Western Michigan cost of living was comparatively low, but...$15? Some people pay close to that at McDonald's.

There are plenty of reasonable options for eating in South Haven. Thirsty Perch has sandwiches/salads and is good. The Vineyard (across from Thirst Perch) has good pizza and salads. Capt. Lou's and the Idler both are on the river and good for drinks, pass on the food unless you are in the mood for deep fried bar food. Clementines is packed at peak times and so so. It's known for its onion rings. There is a nice Italian restaurant just east of Clementines that I haven't eaten at (but it looks nice from the outside).

Saugatuck/Douglas are both very cute, artsy communities. Douglas is much smaller but has some of my favorite shops. The Wild Dog is a great lunch spot and has a good bar for evenings. The dune ride in Saugatuck is fun too.

I don't believe alcohal is permitted on any of the beaches, but I could be wrong. There is a hidden state park just south of SH that it usually fairly deserted and has great beach. Oval Beach is also nice.
