South Beach vs. Miami Beach?

Going to Miami to stay...what is the difference between hotels that say they are on South Beach versus hotels on Miami beach in the north part of town? It seems that South Beach is more expensive, but is it that much more beautiful? Water prettier?
Thanks!

In my experience, the beach is A LOT bigger (wider) in South Beach. And your competition for beach space is less as most South Beach hotels are mid-rise while Miami Beach hotels/condos are huge on both sides of the street. When we looked at the size of the beach further north, we couldn't figure out how everyone fit.

South Beach is rowdier having all the hot clubs, bars and restaurants. And you can also walk to everything. I definitely prefer South Beach.
