South Beach Location Help

Planning a first-time visit to Miami/SB over New Years for DH & myself. I am considering renting a condo at Collins & 40th Street and am wondering about the location.

Is this too far from "the action"? Is it a safe neighbourhood?

The price is right, especially since many "most affordable" hotels are booked/have 3 nt mins. Also includes parking so I'd like to leave the car and go to the beach, and explore Ocean/Lincoln on foot.

Any feedback greatly appreciated.

Enjoy-la!

Personally, I HATE Mid Beach. You cannot walk anywhere, traffic is horrific, and the beach isn't as nice as it is in South Beach.

We always pay more to stay in South Beach.

GoTravel (Hi, Go!! ) has put it perfectly. You may be only two miles from The Action in South Beach, but traffic makes that a ten- to fifteen-minute schlepp. There is indeed nothing of interest in that part of Mid Beach. Just cough up the extra scratch (one thing to help: Skip the rental-- you won't need it in South Beach) and stay in South Beach. Some "reasonably-priced" options I would recommend:

-- Park Central
-- Cardozo
-- Winter Haven
-- Blue Moon

GoTravel has all the right answers...yes, definitely - has helped me out a lot with this trip's planning!

Ok, thx a mint for the replies, and in particular your specific references rjw_lgb_ca - much appreciated.

I'll cough it up and stay where we'll feel the vibe!

Enjoy-la!

We are staying at the Cardozo at Christmas and have been told it's a good location. We thought the rates were not bad at all, so check it out.

Good luck on your trip.

kodi, I checked out Cardozo from rjw_lgb_ca's posting and the reviews were really good for it, so you should have a great time.

No room there for my dates; just secured a place today on 15th so I'm happy with that (just relieved the search is over!). We'll be there closer to NY, have a fab time in SB...

Enjoy-la!

hi! hoping this may help you a little. we were just in SB, 11-30 to 12-2. we stayed at the HGVC (ocean club) on ocean drive which is facing the ocean and at about collins and 9th. if you want to scout lincoln center, etc., you will have to take a taxi or a long, long, long walk, as it was only about a 10-minute or less walk for us to go there. 40th is way, way down and you would, if you walk, go through a three-block area on collins that is pretty deserted and undergoing a lot of renovation. we walked down as far as 27th one day and it was a long haul, but good exercise! that was during the day. i wouldn't walk it at night. taxi is pretty cheap, though, so that's what we would do if we wanted to go to lincoln center from where you are going to stay.

many, many restaurants in the area we stayed......off collins and off washington?. there's an exquisite, fun, reasonable authentic italian eatery in the row of restaurants, i think it was at washington and around 10th or 11th street?? (you will see a mexican restaurant on one corner of this little street and another specialty restaurant on the other side of the little street at the corner and lots of outside tables and umbrellas. it's called hostoria romana and you MUST eat there.....it's fun and it's really delicious!!!!!!

anyway.......try web sites for hotels on ocean drive to check for hotels that may have openings...it's a nice street and the view is great...the beach is a 3-4 minute walk across the street next to Starbucks.
