South Beach, Florida: Has anyone been recently?

We are going to Florida in October, and thought about staying 3 night on "the beach".

South Beach? We are not young and hip, but would like to eat at a few trendy places and see a beautiful place.

Thoughts anyone?

Well, South Beach does fit the bill for trendy shopping and dining and great people watching.

We are not young, but I think we are fairly 'hip' (yea, my kids would agree to that) and we loved South Beach. We were there in April for 2 days before going on a cruise. I definitely recommend a South Beach oceanfront hotel. Just walking the boardwalk on Collins during the day and Ocean Drive at night to people watch was fun.

Check out the hotels along Collins Avenue - Loews, Delano, Sagamore, National, etc.
or stay further north at the Fontainbleau - although you wont want to leave - all the restaurants are wonderful (Scarpetto - yummmmmm) and the pools are gorgeous!!
Eat at Joe's Stone Crabs or Prime 112. Super trendy always someone famous in the crowd.

Old and hip is the next best thing to young and hip.

i was just there today. Had lunch at the fontainebleu...then went over to the eden roc. Both have had major press buzz in the last year. But unless you like huge hotels and crowded pools blaring music and packed with musclebound mooks in wife-beaters (or the other end of the spectrum...balding guys with budweiser tumors) and their exactly-what-you-would-expect girlfriends; steer clear. South Beach is an ugly, overbuilt concrete, congested jungle... high rise highway. Having said that, there are some great, hip restaurants. I'd stay in coral gables, (upscale: the biltmore; interesting, charming and affordable: the st michel) or the ritz-carlton or mandarin oriental in cocoanut grove. Drive to south beach for lunch/dinner, people watching and strolling around..then head back to your sanctuary...
