Source of Legionnaire's Disease in NYC Confirmed

For those not aware of it there has been an outbreak of Legionnaire's Disease in NYC in the last month of so - with 12 dead and more than 100 hospitalized.

Primarily limited to the Bronx and most victims were elderly or immune compromised. Unfortunately this area is one of the poorest in the country and so many local residents have poor underlying health for a number of reasons.

The health department has identified the AC cooling tower of the Opera House hotel in the Bronx as the source of the infection. The cooling tower has now been sanitized and is no longer a source of infection. And there are new city regulations requiring testing of the water in all cooling towers in the city at least every 90 days, although the Opera House Hotel will be testing theirs every 30 days.

There have been no new cases reported in recent days.

Thank you, nytraveler. I had not heard about this outbreak and as I am headed to NYC early next month, I appreciate learning about these recent cautions .... and am pleased that the situation appears to be under good control.

Scary that it was the hotel and yet it sounds like no one from the hotel got sick?

Looks like a nice hotel to me:

Hotel may be OK but the area isn't the best and it's along way from most major sights.

Well, it's a nice hotel that gets good reviews and is close to the subway. For people who can't afford $400 a night, it's a very viable option. Kind of like staying near Earl's Court while in London, which I've done more than once. I'm very glad to see we're beginning to get more hotel options outside of Manhattan that are still on the subway and don't cost a small fortune.

Is it not only one or two stops from Manhattan?

Have you been to the area lately, NYTRAVELER?
